Back in June, I planted straw flowers around the pool.
At the time, they were still small and easy to overlook. I just wanted something cheerful around the edge — flowers that could handle the sun and, hopefully, give that slightly wild, summery feeling I like so much.
And now, at the end of September, I’m looking at them and thinking how quickly that changed.
They grew into little patches of colour around the pool, standing there through the rain and all the strange weather we had this summer. Even when summer is clearly ended, they still look as if they haven’t quite received the message.
And now I’m cutting them.
I’m bringing them inside to dry because straw flowers are perfect for that. They dry really well and keep their colour and shape, which makes them one of those flowers that can stay around long after the garden has gone quiet for the winter.

We do but no one plants them in their gardens.
Why not?! Are they growing in the wild?
Probably because they are not as showy as other flowers. Farms grow them to sell as dry flowers. I grew one year a long time ago. They are just not as showy as tall canna lilies or dahlias! I love that yours grew so tall around the pool.

I would like to click the Like button but it isn’t coming up. The little wheel keeps spinning and says it’s trying to load but it’s not working. This seems to happen more and more lately, mainly on your post but I think it is happening on a couple of others too, so it may not be just your problem.
