I recently came across a sweet old photo of the girls. I can’t believe how much time has passed since I took it! Back then, they were eager to pose for pictures—now it’s a challenge just to get them to stand still together.

They’re growing up so fast, becoming more independent and full of personality. It’s amazing to watch, but I do miss those days when they’d happily smile for the camera. These days, getting a family photo feels like an achievement!
Those easy photo moments are harder to come by. I’m grateful for the memories we captured along the way. I know one day they’ll look back and appreciate them too. Time flies, and I’m doing my best to catch it before it’s gone.
Having run my own photo studio, I’ve learned a few tips for getting older kids to cooperate for photos:
- Keep it Natural: Avoid stiff, posed shots. Let the kids be themselves, capturing their real personalities in candid moments.
- Let Them Be Creative: Ask for their ideas—whether it’s a pose, a location, or even a prop. When they feel involved, they’re more likely to enjoy the experience.
- Make It Fun: Lighten the mood with jokes or playful interactions. The more fun it is, the more willing they’ll be to join.
- Use Quick Sessions: Keep the photoshoots short and sweet. Long sessions can feel tedious, especially for older kids who may get restless.
- Offer Rewards: A small incentive can go a long way in boosting cooperation. This could be a fun activity afterward or a treat.
- Focus on Candid Shots: Some of the best photos come when they don’t even realize the camera is on. Capture them during an activity they love.
- Be Patient and Flexible: Sometimes the best photos happen when you least expect it. Be ready to adapt and stay patient.
These tips will help you get authentic, relaxed photos while keeping the experience fun for everyone!
Warmly,
Ilze

Good tips. The way you describe the change in attitudes to photographs as children grow is so real. As you know I have thousands of mine and much prefer the candid shots
I also like Candid shots. Sometimes I need/want an elegant family portrait 🙂 Two sides of me 🙂
All great ways to make someone confortable.
Thank you!
Your family is lovely, Ilze! Good advice on photographing them. 😊
It seems like they behave perfectly when someone else is behind the camera! But when I try to take a photo, it’s all face-covering and “Mom, stop!” screams. 🙂
Hmm, it seems like the children would love having mom take photos of them.
That is 2018!!! Not anymore 🙂
Aw, I am sure they still love you very much, mom! 😊☺️
I dearly loved taking photos of children while they played when I operated my home daycare! You have some wonderful suggestions that I wish I’d had then. Nice to visit your blog!
Thank you, you are welcome 🙂
