When Carrots Decide to Hug

I had one of those little garden moments that made me laugh.

This year, my carrots are looking really nice. They grew straight, healthy, and have a beautiful bright orange color. Every time I pull one from the soil, it feels like uncovering a tiny treasure.

But then I found something I definitely wasn’t expecting. Instead of a single carrot, I pulled up what looked like a little carrot family! Four carrots had decided to grow tangled together, twisting around each other as if they simply couldn’t bear to be apart. One came off.

I’ve seen forked carrots before, but four separate carrots hugging each other? That was a first for me. Two, yes!

I left them on the kitchen counter for a couple of days, hoping they would dry out just enough for me to gently untangle them. I was curious to see how they had grown around each other. Once I finally managed to separate them, I was amazed to see how incredibly thin each carrot had become in the places where they had been squeezed together. It’s hard to believe they managed to keep growing like that!

Moments like these are part of what makes gardening so enjoyable. You never really know what you’ll discover beneath the soil, and every harvest seems to come with its own little surprise.

These quirky carrots may not be perfect for peeling, but they certainly win the prize for personality!

  1. Ilze, this is pure delight. The way you describe these carrots as ‘simply couldn’t bear to be apart’ it’s such a tender observation. And then to discover they’d actually squeezed themselves thin in their embrace? That’s a story within a story. These quirky carrots may not be perfect for peeling, but they’re perfect for reminding us that life happens in the unexpected moments beneath the soil. Your garden teaches you lessons in every harvest.

  2. Oh, Ilze . . . but it is so dark in the soil and at odd times it gets nasty wet and you can’t see anything . . . and it felt SO good to touch one another and make squeaky noises and go to sleep in each other’s arms . . . one could not see but one did feel . . . methinks you pulled some very contented carrots out to their inevitable doom . . . you should frame the photos for the kitchen . . .

  3. Now those are my kind of carrots. Hugs are the best I love getting them and giving them. These hugging carrots gave me a smile. I love this post. Hugs

  4. What a delightful little discovery! 😊 Those four carrots seem to have decided that growing together was more important than growing straight!

And perhaps there’s a little human story hidden beneath the soil too. Whenever people live closely together in families, relationships or communities, we give up a little space, make compromises, adjust our ways and sometimes even carry a few scars from the experience. We may not always grow exactly as we would have if we had the whole patch to ourselves.

But your little carrot family seems to say something rather lovely: growing together may sometimes leave us a little bent and bruised, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t grown well. Perhaps what matters most is that, despite all the squeezing and adjusting, love still finds room to grow. 🙏🏻❤️

    1. Thank you so much for this beautiful perspective. ❤️ I had simply smiled at the funny shape of those carrots, but you found such a meaningful message hidden beneath the soil. I love the idea that growing together sometimes means making space for one another, even if it leaves us a little bent along the way. And you’re absolutely right—it’s love that makes it all worthwhile. Thank you for sharing such thoughtful words. 😊
