Today is the Autumn Equinox – the point in the year when day and night are almost equal in length. From now on, the days will gradually become shorter and the nights longer.
I always find it interesting how the seasons change without us really having to decide anything.
Around this time of year, I naturally start wanting to deep-clean the house. Summer clothes begin to feel out of place, so I put them away and start looking for the boots, raincoats and warmer things that have been hiding in the back of the wardrobe.
The kitchen changes, too.
I start cooking with apples and cinnamon again. The flavours of summer slowly give way to something warmer and deeper. Fresh berries disappear and apples become the stars of the kitchen.
There is no particular date when I decide that summer is over.
It just happens.
One day I realise that I’m washing the last summer clothes and putting them away. Another day I find myself looking forward to an evening with something baking in the oven and candles lit on the table.
And somehow, the house wants to be cleaned, the cupboards want to be reorganised, and the garden wants to be put to bed.
Perhaps this is my own little seasonal rhythm.
After the busy, bright months of summer, autumn seems to tell me to slow down.
To do a little less. To stay inside a little more.
And eventually, to hibernate — at least a little. 🙂

It seems like we do spring cleaning and then we do autumn cleaning again, but it’s more of an organizing job of putting away the summer things and preparing for winter. We must be a bit like the squirrels.

Those 3 photographs are exquisite–like a mini gallery display! It may technically be autumn here, but it still feels like summer. It has never been this hot and dry before. Everything on the once verdant hillside is dead and dry and crumbling, except for the blasted kudzu which apparently can keep growing and wrapping itself around anything in its path, no matter what. Enjoy yours! I await winter, and just hope there is no ice storm as bad as last year’s!
It’s rainy and getting colder… But the leaves starting to colour, so this will keep me “alive” till Christmas 🙂

In my area, we are supposed to get some warmer days again this week, but they will still be shorter days, so less warm. And the nights are getting cooler… so I need to bring in some logs and be ready to light a fire in the stove when the critical point is reached. This is a wonderful post, reminding us to receive the changes with grace, and to embrace the tasks that nurture us and our families. Thank you.

I was running around like it’s summer for many years, but now I don’t expect much on cooler days, and nothing on cold ones 🙂 We also need to rest and “hibernate” 🙂
