The Resilient Walnuts of Latvia: A Hidden Gem

When you think of walnuts, Latvia might not be the first place that comes to mind, right?

The first time I encountered a Latvian walnut tree was in Vērmanes dārzs, a beautiful park in Riga. I was struck by the tree’s majesty and resilience, knowing it had weathered countless harsh winters. Since that moment, I’ve been inspired to plant one in my own garden. The idea of nurturing such a robust and historic tree in my yard, and eventually harvesting my own walnuts, is something I’m excited to pursue.

Latvia’s walnut trees are not your average orchard inhabitants. These hardy trees have endured some of the harshest winters imaginable, with temperatures plunging to -30 to -40°C. Despite these brutal conditions, they have not only survived but thrived, producing walnuts that are celebrated for their exceptional taste and nutritional value.

What makes these Latvian walnuts so special? Some believe it’s the trees’ unique ability to hibernate during the long, cold winters. The walnuts grown in Latvia are a testament to nature’s ability to adapt and flourish in even the most challenging environments. Their rich, buttery flavor and high nutritional content make them a prized ingredient, whether eaten on their own, added to recipes, or used in various traditional Latvian dishes.

And for me, they represent the start of a new journey in my garden, where I hope to grow my own piece of Latvian history.

P.S. Can’t wait to taste these from the friends neighbours garden.
