How to Make Apple Juice and Apple Puree Using a Steamer

Hello, apple enthusiasts!

In my recent apple processing adventure, I turned a massive 15 kilos of apples into Apple pie filling ( the recipe is here). Another part was transformed into delicious apple juice and rich apple puree using a steamer. If you’re looking to make the most of your apple harvest, here’s a simple guide to help you create both at the same time 🙂

Apple Juice:

  1. Prepare Apples: Wash and quarter apples; there’s no need to peel or core them.
  2. Set Up Steamer Juicer: Fill the bottom part of the steamer with water and place the apples in the steamer basket.
  3. Steam Apples: Cover and steam for 45 minutes to an hour, allowing the apples to release their juice.
  4. Collect Juice: Pour the freshly extracted apple juice into clean, sterilized jars.
  5. Cool and Store: Seal the jars immediately and store them in a cool, dark place. No water-bath canning is needed for the juice (or at least here in Latvia it’s how we do it!)

Apple Puree:

  1. Process leftover Pulp: Mush & push the leftover apple pulp from the steamer through a sieve. I don’t like to use the blender. You can use the blender if you cored your apples.
  2. Fill Jars: Spoon the apple puree into the jars, leaving headspace. Add lids.
  3. Waterbath Can: Process the jars in a boiling water bath for 20 minutes to ensure they are properly preserved.
  4. Cool and Store: Let the jars cool completely, check the seals, and store in a cool, dark place.

What to Do with Apple Puree:

  • Baking: Use it as a natural sweetener or moisture enhancer in muffins, cakes, and bread.
  • Cooking: Stir it into oatmeal, yogurt, or smoothies for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Sauces: Incorporate it into apple sauces or savory dishes as a thickening agent or flavor booster.
  • Baby Food: Perfect as a nutritious and natural baby food option.

With this method, you’ll have fresh apple juice for sipping or cooking, and smooth apple puree perfect for baking or as a tasty addition to various dishes. Enjoy your homemade apple creations throughout the winter!

Feel free to share your experiences or ask any questions about using a steamer or canning apple products. Happy processing!

Best,
Ilze
