Summer Chaos, Renovation, and the Tastiest Tomatoes

This summer has been an absolute whirlwind. Between juggling the renovation and my job, it felt like I constantly ran from one task to the next. Some weeks, the greenhouse didn’t get the attention it deserved—left unwatered, and weeds crept in while my focus was elsewhere.

But nature has a way of surprising you! Despite the neglect, my small yellow tomatoes have been thriving. These little bursts of sunshine are so delicious that I can hardly believe they survived the summer chaos. What was supposed to be the last harvest keeps going, thanks to the unusually warm September. Every time I check the greenhouse, there are more tomatoes waiting to be picked, and the kids waste no time—they eat them right off the vine!

I’ve decided that next year, I’ll definitely plant these tomatoes again. They’ve been such a bright spot in the middle of a hectic season, reminding me that even when things feel out of control, something sweet can still come from it.

Do you like tomatoes?

    1. Autumn is here, and I can’t imagine breakfast without cucumbers or tomatoes. In Latvia, we traditionally eat porridge, bread, and scrambled eggs, with the only ‘vegetable’ being potatoes—and even those aren’t the healthiest option. I’ve been trying to introduce sides like tomatoes and cucumbers for my kids, just to add a healthier touch to breakfast. But now, with the first cool days of the season, I’m cozying up in a sweater, making grilled cheese and porridge with butter… it’s the ultimate comfort food! How about you? Salad eater?

      1. I haven’t grown tomatoes in eons. I don’t have a green thumb or the space now to fight the squirrels over them. Sometimes we can get good ones at the Farmer’s Market, but it leaves a lot to be desired. They just are bringing in the same stuff they sell at the grocery stores here. It’s disappointing.

        1. It’s honestly so disappointing! The local grower has been around for ages, with just a few greenhouses. We know her well—she grows cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, and cabbages, and makes the most delicious sauerkraut. She even sells pre-cooked beets. And her roses? They’re so fragrant and beautiful! Oh, and dill and onions 🙂

    1. I’ve never tried tomato jam before—I didn’t even know it existed! Now I’m super curious to see what it tastes like. Might have to give it a try soon! Do you have any recipes?

  1. Love tomatoes! My Gramps had a large garden and we would eat from it every day. He grew so many tomatoes plants because we all loved them. I’ve never tasted a tomato as good as his. This plant was giving you what you needed, a nice surprise that made you and your family feel better.

                1. Yes, Latvia is relatively small, located in Northern Europe along the Baltic Sea. It borders four countries: Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, Russia to the east, and Belarus to the southeast. Latvia also has a coastline along the Baltic Sea to the west.
Latvia doesn’t share a land border with Sweden, but we are separated by the Baltic Sea to the west. So while there’s no direct border, Sweden is still a neighboring country across the sea!

                  1. Except bordering Russia it sounds like a beautiful place to live. I’ve been to St. Petersburg, Russia and it is awesome, the people were friendly and the Hermitage, boy, what can you say. I went to a ballet and visited several museums. I’ve heard in recent years that even St. Petersburg has changed. What a shame. Having a coastline nearby is a special treat. Sweden is a place I want to visit but still have a hard time thinking about how cold it is. 🙂

  2. Yes, please! I love eating those little red tomatoes, so yummy! Looking For The Light is right, Ilze, the next week here in Las Vegas will be 100 degrees and just a little warmer. Summer is still in full swing in the Mojave Desert!

    1. Wow, 100F (37C!!!!!!!!) degrees! I can’t even imagine that kind of heat! We’re definitely easing into autumn here in Latvia, with cooler days and the leaves starting to turn. I bet those little red tomatoes taste even better in that desert warmth! Stay cool out there in the Mojave! ☀️ By the way, 4 of my team (we are 10) are in America right now, not in Las Vegas 🙂

      1. I say welcome to your team members, Ilze! I have adjusted to the summer heat and like it very much but air conditioning is a beautiful thing. I remember the autumn days in Michigan and how wonderful the sir smells. ❤️
