Celebrating Latvia’s Independence: A Country’s Resilience and Spirit

On November 18th, Latvia marks its Independence Day, a day that celebrates freedom, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of the Latvian people. This year, Latvia turns 106 years old. While this is a relatively young age for a country, its journey toward independence has been anything but simple.

Latvia first declared its independence on November 18th, 1918, after centuries of foreign rule. It faced many challenges, including periods of occupation and war, but the Latvian spirit has always remained strong. In 1991, Latvia regained full independence from the Soviet Union, and since then, the country has flourished.

As a proud Latvian, I celebrate not just our nation’s resilience but also the deep sense of independence that defines us. From the vibrant streets of Riga to the peaceful countryside, Latvia stands tall as a beacon of freedom and unity. Let’s take a moment to reflect on the struggles that shaped our past and the bright future ahead.

Happy 106th Birthday, Latvia!

  1. I welcome a country like Latvia with a dose of freedom and unity spirit like Latvia with open arms. I hope to visit there some day? Where would you recommend?

    1. Thank you! Latvia truly is a beautiful country with a rich history and stunning landscapes. I’d recommend starting with Riga, our capital, to explore its Art Nouveau architecture and Old Town charm. For nature lovers, a visit to Gauja National Park is a must—it’s breathtaking year-round. If you enjoy the sea, the beaches of Jūrmala or the rugged coastline of Cape Kolka are unforgettable. If you’re visiting in December, the Christmas Market in Riga is magical and definitely worth experiencing! And if you’re here in summer, don’t miss the Midsummer Festival (Jāņi) to feel the true unity and spirit of Latvia. Explore more here: https://www.latvia.travel/en

        1. Latvia doesn’t really have big cities—every city here feels like you’re already outside the city! 😊 Nature everywhere 🙂

            1. Short routs like Riga -> Jurmala or Ķemeri. Or Riga -> Sigulda. If you search on the internet map of Latvia, you’ll see we have plenty of forests and nature 🙂

                1. Riga is a good starting point, especially Old Town. If you decide to come closer to Gulbene – perhaps Cēsis or Valmiera, let me know 🙂

                    1. Happy New Year to you too! Wishing you a safe and peaceful year ahead. Let’s hope for brighter days for everyone!

    1. That sounds amazing! 😍 September is a great time to visit Latvia. I hope you have a wonderful time exploring Riga and enjoying everything it has to offer! 🇱🇻😊 Will you stay in just Riga or travel around a bit?

      1. Thanks for getting back to me, at this stage I haven’t planned out what I will get up to as I will be visiting Poland before. However, I am very excited for Latvia! I have 3 days in Riga & then will be taking the bus to Tallin (so hopefully see some lovely countryside there), however I would love any recommendations of places around Riga that would be cool to visit, I can’t drive, so anywhere with a Bus or Train station😊

        1. Followed you on Instagram! Since I don’t live in Riga, I can’t offer many recommendations, but you should try LIDO for food. It’s a great place to experience our cuisine, which, like our history, is intertwined with Russian, Polish, and a bit of Swedish influences. Let’s chat in Instagram.
