I had already seeded enough tomatoes for this season, so when I found an old packet of seeds—expired four years ago—I was ready to throw it away. They were so old, I didn’t even think they had a chance. But at the last moment, I thought, Why not? and decided to plant them in the laziest way possible.
I scraped soil from different bags, even from the table, and dumped it all into an empty butter cookie tin. No careful spacing, no proper seed-starting mix—just a messy experiment with zero expectations.

And guess what? These were the first to sprout! Every single seed came up strong and determined. Meanwhile, the ones I carefully planted—each seed placed in a pot with perfect soil and all the care in the world—are still nowhere to be seen!

Now, I have way more tomato seedlings than I ever planned for, and my greenhouse isn’t big enough for this unexpected army. I’ll water them for a few more days before pricking them out, but I really need to start thinking about where they will all go. Maybe some in the raised beds, maybe a few in pots—we’ll see! Or maybe give the plants to friends!
Have you ever had a gardening surprise like this? Let me know! 🌱🍅

How fun! I see much salsa, tomato soup and BLT’s in your family’s future 🙂

Not sure they will eat that, but I am ready to plant all the tomatoes 🙂 and make the pasta sauce for the winter.

No I haven’t but I’m so glad you tried. Now you know not to give up on seeds. 🙂

🙂 I know that, and also, don’t put them in the ground more than you need – cause they all might germinate 🙂 I can’t throw them away.

Isn’t it funny how nature works? The seeds I expected the least from ended up being the strongest! Now I have a bit of a tomato jungle on my hands. 😂

Those are cherry tomatoes! I love them, too! Mine will be regular tomatoes called Marmande.

Thanks! Thursday I have a chiropractor adjustment, also need to call to get my Medicare started. Hitting 65 next year means doing this here. Uhg…

Sounds like a busy day ahead! Hopefully, the chiropractor visit helps you feel great. 😊 Dealing with Medicare paperwork doesn’t sound fun, but at least you’re getting it sorted early! Are you planning anything nice to treat yourself after all that?

I will likely delay doing the medicare thing until after the new windows for the house go in, there is still time. Just trying to manage things!

I’m so glad you didn’t throw them out! Sometimes things we thought were worthless prove otherwise!

I’m not throwing them out for sure! I don’t like that type of lifestyle 🙂 If it’s growing, I will prick them out and take care 🙂 Then, I will give plants or tomatoes to friends/family etc 🙂
