I’ve seen them before, but never quite like this. The cranes—tall, elegant, and ever so cautious—have always been fleeting visitors in my world. I never tried to capture them – they were gone in an instant.

Yesterday, I spotted them for the first time around our house! I feel lucky. I reached for my camera, gripping my 500mm lens, hoping this time would be different. But even with that reach, they still felt just a bit too far away. I needed to be closer, but cranes are not the kind to grant such an opportunity easily. As always, they were too swift, too distant. It’s almost as if they know when they are being watched, and with one elegant movement, they slip back into the safety of the wild.

There’s something almost mystical about cranes. Unlike deer, who return to familiar places and grow accustomed to human presence, cranes remain wary. They are travelers, tied more to the sky than the earth, their migrations a reminder of the ever-changing seasons.

They are so large and yet fly gracefully.

Yes! I love those sounds! I spent half the day thinking they were storks—then I noticed they weren’t white enough. So I grabbed my camera and headed into the field to investigate. I’m glad I did it!

I feel lucky! And I can hear them from distant fields near a forest. Not sure I want to go there and disturb them 🙂 since these two were disturbed for sure 😦
