I finally did it—I planted and seeded the furrows. This year I have 4!
It’s ridiculously late in the season, I know. Normally by now, the garden would already be showing signs of life, and I’d be sharing photos of sprouting rows or eating baby carrots! But this year… this year has been strange.

It rains almost every day. Heavy storms and soaking drizzle keep everything damp and muddy. Our entire yard is like a sponge. Puddles everywhere. The grass grows too quickly, but it’s nearly impossible to mow—too wet, too soft, too messy.
I kept waiting for better weather, but it never was. Eventually, I gave up waiting and planted anyway. Since our soil is clay, I tried to avoid stepping on it too much—once it dries, it turns rock-hard and nearly impossible to break up. I don’t know if anything will grow. The seeds are in, but the conditions are far from ideal.
At the end of the last furrow, I stumbled upon a lovely rock 🙂 I’m not sure what kind it is, but I kept it as a little keepsake—a reminder of the day I managed to finish all the seeding in just 20 minutes. As usual, I was out of breath and red-faced, but the storm clouds were closing in fast, and I couldn’t wait any longer. It’s June, after all!
List of the plants in furrows in 2025 (for me):
- Beetroot BONA
- Beetroot CYLINDRA
- Carrots Purple Dragon
- Carrots NANTES 5
- Broad Beans Haba Fava (seedlings)
- Dill Diana
- Turnips Wilhelmsburger Sator
- Kohlrabi SUPERSCHMELZ
- Corn ELAN F1
- Beans DIOR
- Beans Purple Teepee
- Turnips Goldana
- Radish RUNDER SCHWARZER WINTER
- Leeks (seedlings)
I hope it will survive the heavy rains and grow. I like gardening, but I’m relieved this is not my work/income! It’s not that important whether something grows or not, I would enjoy the process and promise not to worry too much 🙂

The weather plays such a huge role in planting, as you know all too well.

Thank you, Jean! I hope they will grow… but… I talked to myself and we decided to enjoy the process and not worry about results 🙂 They are not important!

Maybe you’ll be switching to tropical plants or a rice paddy with all the rain. May what you planted grow strong and abundantly, Ilze.
