Sotrk! A Surprise Visitor in My Yard

I still can’t believe it—I got pictures of a sotrk right in my yard! It came so close, just calmly walking around like it owned the place. I grabbed my phone as fast as I could and snapped a few shots before it flew off again. What a moment!

For those who don’t know, sotrk is the Latvian word for stork, and here it comes with a bit of folklore baggage… In Latvian tradition, storks are known to bring babies. 😅 Now, that’s something I definitely don’t need right now! I love wildlife and nature’s visits, but maybe next time this majestic bird can deliver its “gift” to the neighbors instead?

All jokes aside, it was truly special to see such a beautiful creature up close. There’s something magical about these unexpected moments, especially when they come with a dose of folk wisdom or superstition.

Do you have similar traditions or interesting folk knowledge about animals in your culture? I’d love to hear them!

    1. I used to have a stork nest on my property, perched high on top of a pole. But then modernization came—electric wires were moved underground, the poles were removed… and with them, the nest. They took it away. 😔
No more stork nest on my land.

    1. Nice 🙂 Also, here sometimes they (babies) are found in cabbages 🙂 They are lovely… but when they walk close by, I’m a bit scared… they have such strong beaks!!! I’m dead if they decide to attack… I know they won’t 🙂
