Freezing Peas for Winter

This summer, I had the sweetest surprise—not just from the peas themselves, but from the people who grew them.

A local family here grows peas, and this time they did something extra generous: they opened their fields and let locals pick up to three liters for free! No charge. Just come, pick, and take home a little taste of summer. It’s one of those beautiful, quietly heartwarming things that makes living in the countryside feel like a gift. We know the family… and I got spoiled – the peas arrived on my doorstep!

I got a big bowl and spent the afternoon shelling peas. Usually, a few pods will have a worm or two inside—someone’s had an early snack—but this year? Not a single one. Every pod was clean and full, like they’d been waiting just for me.

Once all the peas were freed from their pods, I got to work prepping them for winter. Here’s my simple routine, in case it’s helpful:

  1. Blanch – I boil the peas for about 2–3 minutes. Just enough to keep their color and taste fresh.
  2. Ice Bath – Straight from the pot into a big bowl of ice water. This stops the cooking and keeps them bright green and sweet.
  3. Drying – After a few minutes in the ice water, I spread them out on a clean kitchen towel and pat them dry.
  4. Freezing – I spread them in a single layer on a tray and freeze them loose. Once they’re frozen solid, I roll them into freezer bags.

This way, the peas don’t clump together, and I can easily grab a handful for soup, stew, or a quick veggie side—just the amount I need, no waste.

It’s such a satisfying feeling—knowing that on a dark winter day, I’ll be able to taste summer again. Just a few green peas from the freezer, and I’m back in July for a moment.

Do you freeze anything for winter?
