The Last Week Before Vacation

It’s the last week before vacation, and while many people are packing suitcases or making travel checklists, I find myself leaning into something much simpler: staying home. We don’t have any grand adventures planned—just a short trip to Salacgrīva to celebrate my brother’s birthday. The rest of the time, I’m looking forward to something that feels even more special… time to just be.

I want to breathe in the quiet moments at our house, enjoy the garden, and maybe even let myself daydream a little. These are the kinds of slow, grounding days that I long for. There’s so much peace in noticing the way sunlight moves across the floor, how the flowers bloom a little differently each day, or how satisfying it feels to paint something in watercolor—even if I’m still very much a complete beginner.

But before that, this week will be full of work and all the little things that need to be wrapped up so I can truly let go once vacation starts. Because of that, I probably won’t be around here on the blog much. Just know that I’m somewhere between work emails and daydreams, slowly transitioning from to-do lists to simple pleasures.

And honestly? I’m the kind of person who doesn’t need traveling to feel refreshed. Sometimes, staying home and enjoying what we’ve already built—the space, the quiet, the life—is more than enough.

Talk to you soon,
Ilze

      1. A good question, Ilze, I am a serious home body and love being on my couch chatting with my Latvian friend and many others around the world! My sister asked me a while back why I don’t travel more – I love being home. I didn’t buy this home just to be gone so much!

        1. Yes, I completely get that! I love being at home — even if it’s still unfinished and a bit cluttered. There’s something comforting about it.
Sometimes I wonder why so many people feel the need to travel constantly… maybe it’s a way of escaping everyday life? I guess I find more peace in staying grounded.

          1. I feel safe and comfy here, why travel? My trips to Michigan are plenty enough for me. My sis told me the other day that our cousins who are in our age bracket, have traveled extensively to other countries around the globe and feel like they are satisfied now. Good on them! ❤️

  1. I understand very well why you wouldn’t want to go away from such a
beautiful home! We also don’t go away much, mostly because we’re older
and have a list of ailments! but it’s just so nice to rest and relax
    into the time off. Enjoy!

    1. Mandy, you captured it so well — there’s comfort in staying still. What small pleasures around your place make you feel most rested?

      1. Well, where to start. A cup of tea (black, weak, no sugar) whenever I
like. Sitting reading in the quiet. The ability to have an afternoon
rest, and indeed to sleep whenever I need to. A small but lovely garden.
We’re both quite tidy and very much creatures of habit, so things have
their place . . . and we both really like that, it makes life so much
        easier. I could go on . . .

        1. That sounds absolutely lovely.
And yes — having a place for everything really does make life feel calmer, doesn’t it? I’d love to hear more if you feel like going on — I find these little glimpses into daily life so comforting and inspiring.

    1. I appreciate that reminder, Eha. Rest and reflection give space to speak more clearly. Do you find silence sometimes leads to surprising clarity?
