Woken Up by Magic

It’s not every night you get woken up at 2 a.m., and usually, when Janis does it, it’s because something serious is happening. In our 15 years together, it’s only happened twice—and both times it was because I needed to call an ambulance. Kidney stones are never fun.

But last night… last night was different. It wasn’t pain. It was Aurora.

At first, I was groggy, grumpy even, too sleepy to speak. I slipped on a jumper and went outside, feeling the crisp 7°C air around me. And there it was—Aurora, spreading its beauty across the sky in quiet, magical waves. The world felt still, almost reverent.

I’m posting all the pictures from my phone… sorry!

Sleep didn’t come back easily after that. My mind lingered on the glow above, the way the colors danced. But by 6:45, I was up again, back in my usual rhythm, cooking breakfast for the girls.

Some nights are for sleep. Some nights are for magic. Last night, I was grateful for both.

  1. WOW!
That’s just too cool! I’m glad you got to see it – and the presence of mind to take pics so you could share it with those of us who may never be blessed enough to see it in person!
    Well done!

  2. Stunning! Apart from the colours, I’m also struck by how many stars are visible in the night sky. Here in Switzerland, we can see plenty of stars from high up in the mountains where there’s very little light pollution, but down in the towns they are almost invisible. You are doubly blessed!

    1. Thank you! Yes, the stars here are incredible—so many of them, and the skies feel so clear. I can imagine how magical it must be up in the Swiss mountains! You’re right, we really are lucky to have such a view almost every night.

  3. Wow, Ilze, I want to see the Aurora. What you saw was even more beautiful with the purple among the other colors. I wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep either had I seen those magical lights. Thank you for the photos.

    1. It’s interesting, Miriam! You can see it in the sky, it feels like it’s shimmering… but the colors aren’t that bright, that is what the phone can “see”. It’s much lower intensity.

  4. If I go back to my childhood, the Aurora was not oft seen in Estonia and we are that wee bit north of you . . . as a small kid Dad used to take me to the beach looking north > I was actually a wee bit scared that all those bright and colourful lights would come and ‘get me’ 🙂 ! Your photos are just beautiful rho’ there are not that many different hues! Reading from the papers during the last few days – there supposedly is a huge storm in the stratosphere and much activity is expected ???
