A Little Bit of Hope for Autumn

Yesterday evening we had dinner with a beautiful view. The weather was calm, the kind of evening that makes you want to stay outside just a little longer.

After dinner, I wandered over to the vegetable garden with a handful of seed packets. It might be July, but there’s still time to sow a few things for late summer and autumn harvests.

I planted another row of lettuce, some dill, and parsley. Maybe they’ll grow, maybe they won’t—but gardening is always a little act of optimism. I also sowed Japanese radish and Chinese cabbage, hoping they’ll be ready when the days become cooler.

Of course, I wasn’t gardening alone.

I had a very enthusiastic little helper who was fascinated by the baby carrots. At some point, he was absolutely delighted that I let him climb right on top of my raised bed while I was sowing seeds. He thought it was the best playground ever.

I have a feeling that was both the first and the last time I’ll allow that particular gardening technique.

Still, it made me smile. The seeds are in the ground, the evening was peaceful, and now all that’s left is to wait and see what grows.

  1. Hi Ilze,

I loved your thought that “gardening is always a little act of optimism.” What a lovely way to look at it. I think that’s something many gardeners can relate to.

Your little helper certainly looked as though he was having the best time. 😊 That part of your post made me smile.

Thank you for sharing another peaceful glimpse into your garden.

  2. What a perfect little moment, Ilze. I love that you planted seeds in July with full knowledge they might not grow, that’s the whole thing, isn’t it? The act of believing in something anyway. And your helper treating the raised bed as the world’s best playground while you work around him, that’s the real harvest. Those photos of him discovering the garden, the light coming through just right, the peaceful evening before the day gets busy again. There’s so much contentment in this post. 🌿

  3. Your words really make me think how fast time passes. It seems but yesterday that you were wondering whether it was too early to sow seeds or put plants outside . . . and your summer really is so short! It is mid-winter here – 10C at 8am and it will go up to 19C and we will shiver and say ‘Oh my God, put another sweater on’ 🙂 ! I have just replaced some herb plants on my patio – basil is the only one which wants us to get to August ! Oh – Marley is enjoying himself, but, but 🙂 !

    1. Yes! Put another sweater on 🙂 Well, I hope for late autumn be warm and nice, so I can enjoy late Chinese cabbage harvest… maybe 🙂
