I bought apple trees. Eight of them plus two pear trees.
I hope they will arrive this year… I think I need to plant them this week. But then I read that container-grown apple trees can be planted until the ground freezes. Apparently, they don’t mind autumn planting, as long as the soil is still workable and they have a chance to settle in. So perhaps I can relax a little… Will see 🙂
I chose eight varieties, all of them local varieties or varieties that are familiar here in Latvia. Some names might sound familiar to you, especially if you grew up around apple trees. Others might be completely new.
My little collection includes:
- Nitschners Strawberry Apple
- Auksis
- Kerr (crab apple)
- Atvasara
- Pirja
- Red Williams
- Meduņica
- Cukuriņš

I chose a mixture because I want apples that ripen at different times, some to eat straight from the tree and others to keep for later. There is something lovely about the idea of having our own apples throughout the season.
Also I will try to grow these pear trees, but usually suffer from Gymnosporangium sabinae.
- Early Shu
- Tem-bo-li

So, now I have to wait for them to arrive and then to find the spot and plant them 🙂
If you recognise any of these varieties, please let me know!

How exciting! Can’t wait to see them in the ground, and next year, in fruit! Mandy.
All new varieties to me! Good luck with them. I tried planting 2 apple trees at my last house. Between the deer and the groundhogs, I didn’t get many. They also developed some sort of blight. I ended up cutting them down. There is nothing as wonderful than fresh picked fruit when it’s ripe.
Oh the wild hares are the ones eating all the apple trees. I need to build fence around the “apple garden” 🙂
I don’t recognise any of the varieties but they look delicious! We have one called Pink Lady here that I looove!
Never heard of Pink Lady! I googled and you need to see this: https://www.instagram.com/reels/Dc8nOo3tymx/
That is a delivery to look forward to! I don’t know any of those varieties, but the place that I buy apples locally grows about 30 varieties, the majority of which can’t be found in grocery stores. I hope your apple trees bring you great joy and good eating for years to come!
