Living in a world overflowing with plastic, I initially thought reducing my plastic consumption was a Herculean task. With our daily reliance on plastic—from phones to cars to computers—going completely plastic-free seemed nearly impossible. However, I discovered that living with less plastic is both feasible and impactful.

The environmental damage caused by plastic is alarming. From pollution to wildlife threats, plastic wreaks havoc on our planet. If you’re curious about the scale of the problem, a quick online search will reveal the severity of plastic’s impact. By taking small, deliberate steps, I’ve found that I can contribute to a healthier planet. Here’s how I did it and how you might find success too:
I Switched to Reusable Shopping Bags
One of the easiest changes I made was switching to reusable shopping bags. It seemed like a small adjustment, but it made a big difference. I chose lightweight cotton bags that are easy to carry and wash, which made them perfect for everyday use.
Now, free plastic bags aren’t allowed in Latvia, I think it’s good.
I Started Refusing Disposable Plastic Bags
Plastic bags were everywhere, but I decided to make a change by refusing them. I always carried my reusable bags with me when shopping and politely declined plastic bags when offered. For bulk items, I placed them directly into my cart or bag, avoiding the need for plastic altogether.
This simple change helped me significantly cut down on plastic waste. I discovered that many stores offer alternative options, like paper or compostable bags, which are better for the environment, but not in my small town.
I Gave Up Bottled Water
One of the most impactful changes I made was giving up bottled water. Instead, I invested in a reusable water bottle. I chose a stainless steel or glass bottle.
I started filling up my bottle before leaving the house and refilling it throughout the day. I’m happy to see, that my girls also don’t buy water in the bottle.
By incorporating these three personal tips into my daily routine, I’ve significantly reduced my plastic consumption. Each small change has contributed to a larger positive impact on the environment.
And I’m not just saying, these habits been with our family for more than 10 years.
Did you know that picnik can be packed in glass jars with the lids?

I’m happy to hear Peggy. Yes, us too. All my kids had reusable or compostable diapers. Had a conversation with a friend, who still uses plastic a lot and she asked me for this simple/small changes post 🙂

I’ve done the same, but I never really bought bottled water. Great hints~! One more thing is I do try to not buy items with too much packaging, but that is a tough one sometimes

Thank you for your helpful article. I too don’t buy bottled water and carry my own reusable bottle always when I go out to the market
