I know it might seem a bit early, or maybe not, but I’m already choosing wallpaper for our home! With most of the big renovation tasks behind us and the vinyl flooring decided (you can read about that adventure here), it’s time to focus on adding the finishing touches.
I ordered a lot of samples, but at about 1 euro each, it’s well worth the investment. Since wallpaper rolls can range anywhere from 50 to 150 euros, I want to be sure I absolutely love what we’re getting. And since we’re ordering online, it saves me from driving around to wallpaper salons—comparing them right at home is much more convenient!

As with most of our renovation, we’re handling the decorating ourselves. No designers involved! While designers can be a perfect fit for some, I’ve always believed in trusting my instincts for our space. It’s personal, and no one knows better than we do how we want it to feel. Plus, doing it ourselves has made this journey even more rewarding.
Now that the millions of samples are here, it’s time to start putting them up and making some final decisions. Stay tuned—I’ll be sharing our progress … some day 🙂
How did you choose your interior? Any tips or favorite patterns?

My approach is buy the best furniture you can afford, add a few extra special pieces that become a feature item, use as much light in the house as possible and my style is a mix, laid back vibe without a defined “style”. I use art everywhere I can and use some of my own photos to mix in smaller spots. We have two dogs so I have to keep it real, nothing breakable at their level. I love the open floorplan you to have and your very creative I can tell from the electricaal room. 🙂

Thank you for sharing your ideas! Our technical room will definitely have character, and the ground floor—or as we say in Latvia, the ‘first floor’—will follow an ‘old cottage’ style. I have some beautiful old furniture from my grandmother, including a black oak buffet. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen it in over a year; it’s tucked away in storage, completely buried in boxes! Can’t wait to see my old buffet again!

I have many antique pieces of furniture and goodies from my grandparents. I use them where I can because it adds warmth. When we move, myhusband is going to relfinish my great grandmothers sewing machine and I’m going to feature it in one of the rooms downstairs. I have several goodies he has bought me that also need refurbished, hoping retirement will allow time to get them done. Black oak is beautiful. We’re using an antique dining table now, a low table his uncle made, a china cabinet from my granny and several smaller pieces for decoration.

Why wait? Refinishing pieces yourself. It can be such a rewarding experience, and it gives you a chance to put a personal touch on something that already has so much family history. Even starting with some smaller items could be a good way to ease into the process. Plus, working on these treasures can be a great creative outlet. If you ever decide to give it a try, it could be a fun project with beautiful results!

I have bad arthritis and two thumbs with problems so me doing it had always been out of the question. If he doesn’t relish the sewing machine after we move I can always put a runner over it and noone will know the damage my gramps did to it.

I would let it be with the damage, it will remind of the gramps 😉

He kept an oil can on a piece of newspaper on it for years and the oil and newspaper have dried on their. I don’t think it’s a huge job but I don’t really know.

I would try to get the newspaper off, perhaps with water….

That was one thought I had. Right now it’s in our storage room with the other antique furniture and I can’t get to it. I’m not sure it need restoring, it’s just the mess gramps made on half of the top. I love that old machine and can only imagine my granny watching her mother sew on it.

I hope you find the perfect wallpaper for your home, Ilze! Wallpaper isn’t popular here, I haven’t seen it anywhere. My walls are all paint!

Good luck choosing. We have a lot of art on our walls, so find paint is better for us.

The paint is winning here, but for the ground floor (or as we count in Latvia – The first floor) I will have a wallpaper to make the vintage/cottage feeling 🙂 I hope I will make it 😀

The wallpaper I would choose is in the first shot, behind the chair.. 🙂

Ha ha ha – “Helmī is the best” – I should agree with you, but I guess I need base and then I can cover it with “wallpapers” like these 😀

Not too early, I’d say, although you might change some ideas before you carry them out. Our general principle is plain walls as a back cloth for framed pictures, rather than competing with them

That’s a great principle! Plain walls really do make an ideal backdrop, allowing artwork to shine without visual competition. I may adapt that approach but also keep experimenting—sometimes it’s fun to have a few ideas in mind to see what feels right before finalizing anything. Thanks for the inspiration!
