First Snowflakes & Ramalina fraxinea

I’m still under the weather, but I managed a slow 15-minute “walk” outside today. The weather was awful—cold, gray, and damp. To top it off, I spotted the first few snowflakes drifting down, teasing the winter ahead.

Despite the bleakness, I found a small surprise: a piece of Ramalina fraxinea lying on the ground. This is one of our local lichens, often found in the treetops where it clings to branches. Ramalina fraxinea has a unique, branching structure and a pale green color, which gives it an almost ethereal look.

Ramalina are incredibly resilient and can even tell us about the health of the environment—they’re sensitive to pollution, so finding them is often a sign of clean air.

And to that note, let’s end this short post and get back to hot tea drinking…

    1. Thank you! Yes, sometimes even the gray days have a certain charm. I’m not fully ready for snow either, but I’m trying to appreciate these chilly moments before winter fully settles in. There’s something about bundling up and enjoying a warm drink on a cold day that makes it all a bit cozier! 😊

    1. Still feeling unwell… exhausted, itchy throat, and sweating. I might visit the doctor to get a sick leave and avoid working, especially since I don’t need to go anywhere. I just can’t focus like this.

      1. Wow, that is a miserable state to be in, I’ve been there, Ilze. I really hope that you get better soon and that your family doesn’t catch this from you. Snuggle that blanket and get some sleep. 😴🙏🏻

        1. Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words. Unfortunately, my family has also started to feel unwell. I hope we can all recover quickly! I’ll definitely take your advice and snuggle up with a blanket for some rest. 😊🙏🏻

          1. You’re welcome, Ilze. Sorry about your family feeling sick. I go to the pharmacy every autumn for a Flu vaccine and the latest COVID update which I did about one month ago.
