Our Christmas Celebration 2024: Family, Traditions, and Cozy Moments

Christmas this year was a wonderful blend of family time, traditions, and cozy moments. My brother and his family arrived on the 23rd of December, setting the festive tone with laughter and catching up. One of the highlights was puzzling with my mom. She had never tried it before, so she wasn’t entirely at ease while searching for the pieces. But I absolutely loved that she gave something I enjoy a try—it made the moment even more special.

The next day, on Christmas Eve, we gathered with Jānis’ family in a nearby forest (Jānis parent’s property) for a simple yet heartwarming celebration. Although there was no snow this time, the atmosphere was still magical. We cooked soup and sausages over an open fire, enjoying the warmth of the flames and each other’s company.

In the evening, we returned home for a traditional Latvian Christmas dinner and, of course, the much-anticipated present opening! In Latvia, gifts are exchanged and unwrapped on Christmas Eve, making it a special highlight of the night. Seeing the joy on everyone’s faces as they unwrapped their gifts added to the warmth of the celebration. We also helped Ilona recover from the braids she picked up during her holiday in Egypt three weeks ago, adding an unexpected but memorable twist to the evening

On Christmas Day, we hosted a brunch at our place. It was lovely to have my brother and my mom join us again, sharing stories and savoring the holiday spirit together. Three days felt like a bit much for me, though. I think starting on the 24th and wrapping up with brunch on the 25th might work better in the future. We’re all learning what rhythms suit us best, aren’t we?

When they left, I had a jumper and scarf… I was cold and shaking. The compressor, unfortunately, isn’t repairable and will be replaced on the 27th… or possibly after the New Year. To unwind, I finished the puzzle, bringing a satisfying close to the festivities.

Now, as the celebrations wind down, it’s time to pack for Riga (even though I don’t really want to go… but I feel like I should). I’m torn because it’s so much easier to stay home, yet the thought of seeing my colleagues in person and hugging a few friends makes me want to go. We’ll see what I decide!

  1. Wow, I love the many wonderful photos, Ilze! I’m glad that you had a great Christmas gathering! You look very cold all bundled up, sorry about the compressor. Another expense you don’t need but being a home owner is expensive.

    1. Thank you! 😊 You won’t believe it, but Jānis bought the compressor in the summer—just in case! 😄 Turns out it was a good call. And yes, being a homeowner definitely comes with its surprises and expenses!

  2. It looks like it was fun and beautiful! I didn’t understand what you meant by, ” help Ilona recover from the brides.” until I saw the image of the family taking out her braids. Years ago my daughter got some put in hair in Mexico. She looked so cute. They warned us not to keep them in more than two weeks or else her hair could start breaking off and be damaged. Same for your sister in law?

I love your fox jumper! I’ve been eyeing the Polo Bear jumpers by Ralph Lauren. They’re so cute!

If you go to the work Christmas Party I hope you have a great time.

    1. Thank you for your sweet comment! Yes, Ilona’s braids definitely caused some laughter during the evening—taking them out was quite the task, but it was all part of the fun. And yes, the same advice applied to my sister-in-law—she didn’t keep them in for too long either!

The fox jumper is one of my favorite—such a fun and cozy look! It’s from Joules.

I’m hoping to make it to the work Christmas Party—thank you for the well wishes! I’ll be sure to enjoy it!
