Yesterday, I saw something magical—a horse and sleigh gliding through the snow. It felt like stepping into a winter wonderland.

This wasn’t a tourist sleigh but a 100-year-old Latvian worker’s sleigh, originally used for hauling wood from the forest. No one does that anymore! This one had been cleverly repurposed into a sitting sleigh, with two tires and a vegetable box added for the back rest.
Have you ever seen a horse and sleigh? I’d love to hear your stories.

Yeah! It feels like stepping back 50 years into the deep countryside. 😊 I did a bit of digging and discovered that this one woman lives not too far from our house. She’s a post officer and has horses, which she absolutely adores. She’s the only one around here keeping this piece of history alive. Horses need to move, so why not with the sleigh 🙂

What a great way to enjoy nature in the winter.

For her 🙂 I’m not sure I would want such a ride 🙂

Thank you so much! It truly was a magical moment, and the horse is such a gentle soul. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos!

I’d love to have seen this. Thanks. When I was a kid an old gentleman drove his horse and wagon by our house a few times. He obviously thought a lot of his horse and gear. The horse was sleek and the wagon a bright green with regular auto ties. I desperately wanted to go along. Lovely memory!

Thank you for sharing such a lovely memory! It’s amazing how these moments stay with us, isn’t it? That bright green wagon with auto tires must have been such a sight! I hope you get a chance to enjoy a ride like that one day—it’s truly special.

Yes, in NY state growing up in the Catskills. Our neighbors bred horses and also race horses. They owned the local log cabin bar and restaurant-originally from Germany.

That sounds like such a fascinating place to grow up! The Catskills must have been beautiful, and having neighbors who bred and raced horses must have made it even more special. I bet their log cabin bar and restaurant had so much character, especially with their German roots! If you can find online and post a link here, would be interesting to see 🙂

It has changed hands and ownership. German family still lives in the area, children moved but the place build by father and son is still there!

Hello Ilze, lovely images. My mum told me that they would go to school on a horse drawn sleigh in the Latvian winter.

I bet the sleigh might look something as simple as this one! Greetings from winter 🙂

Wonderful. We have a number of old horse-drawn carts, but scarcely any snow

Such magical pictures! In my homeland South Africa there is very little snow – none where I grew up and used to live. When I visited my daughter in the United States, the beauty of the snow in Pennsylvania overwhelmed me. A practical Canadian friend had this to say: “It’s beautiful to look at, but hard to deal with.”

It must have been such a magical experience to see snow for the first time in Pennsylvania! I can understand your friend’s point of view—snow is certainly beautiful, but it does come with its challenges. It’s like nature’s beauty that asks for a little extra effort, whether it’s shoveling or dressing warmly enough. Do you think you’d like to experience more snowy places, or do you prefer the warmth of South Africa? And – greetings from Latvia 🙂

I now reside with my daughter and her husband in the south of the United States – where we just get cold and frost. Would love to play in the snow again – but not to live in a snowy place permanently – I’m much too lazy!

It sounds like you have the best of both worlds—enjoying the charm of frost without the hassle of snowy winters! A snowy visit to play sounds like a lot of fun, but I completely understand preferring the milder climate for everyday life. 😊

Hello,
The horse drawn sleigh ride sounds lovely. There are areas here were the tourist can go for rides.
Beautiful images. Take care, have a wonderful week!
