Childhood in a Bowl: Kissel – A Sweet and Fruity Tradition

If you missed my earlier post where I shared the recipe for Cottage Cheese Pie—one of my ultimate comfort foods tied to childhood memories and family celebrations—you can find it here: Cottage Cheese Pie Recipe.

Today, I’d love to introduce you to another beloved Latvian treat that pairs perfectly with Cottage Cheese Pie: Ķīselis (Kissel). This fruity, smooth dessert is just as nostalgic, and together with the pie, they create the ultimate comforting duo.

I used to think that making a kissel was difficult, but it’s actually quite simple. What’s great about this dessert is its versatility—it can be served as a liquid sauce or drink, a thicker pudding-like consistency, or even fully set to be enjoyed with milk.

This recipe is for a version that’s more like a source for the Cottage Cheese Pie.

  • 2 tabelspoons potato starch
  • a half cup of cold water

Directions

  1. Bring the juice (or syrup mixture) to a boil, then turn off the heat.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the potato starch with the cold water until smooth.
  3. Slowly pour the starch mixture into the hot juice while stirring continuously.
  4. Stir until the mixture thickens to your desired consistency. Serve warm or chilled over Cottage Cheese Pie.

  1. I’m not a good cook and won’t try this but it too sounds delicious, Ilze! I remember an old Danish proverb that says: Kissin’ don’t last but cookin’ do. It’s still true for me…

    1. Haha, I love that Danish proverb! It’s so true—good food really does have a lasting impact. Cooking might not be for everyone, but the joy of sharing a meal is something special. If you ever do feel like trying it, I’m sure you’ll make something delicious, even if it’s a simple dish!

          1. I’m open to that, Ilze, but I don’t mess with dating apps and would rather meet someone organically if you know what I mean. Until then, life is good. Sorry new girlfriend, but you’ll never have access to my bank accounts! Hah!

            1. Totally get that—meeting someone organically has its own charm! And hey, keeping the bank accounts locked down is just good sense. 😂 Life’s good when you’ve got your priorities straight. Wishing you luck on your organic adventures!
