I couldn’t sleep. You know those restless nights when your mind simply won’t quiet down, and even your usual rituals—tea, journaling, a bit of stretching—don’t help? That was me, tossing and turning.
Eventually, I gave up trying. I slipped out of bed, wrapped myself in a hoodie, and stepped outside for some fresh air, it wasn’t raining! This summer rain is all we have…. or overcast…
There it was—huge, glowing, low on the horizon—the full moon. But not just any full moon. This one looked tinted with soft pink and red hues, as if the sky had dipped it in blush. I remembered reading about this kind of moon before: the Strawberry Moon.
I, for once, didn’t go back in to take my camera out. I wanted to relax and enjoy. I took pictures with my phone…

Despite its name, the Strawberry Moon doesn’t get its color from berries, of course. It’s named after the strawberry harvesting season in parts of North America. But still, it felt fitting—the warm, reddish tones were unmistakable. Maybe it was the way the moonlight mixed with a bit of summer haze, or maybe it was just the magic of catching something so beautiful when you least expect it.
Have you ever caught sight of a Strawberry Moon? Did it feel a little magical to you too?

I don’t stay up late enough to see one or even a full moon. I’m an early to bed person.

Oh, I totally get that—early bedtimes are magical in their own way! Maybe one day the moon will surprise you in the early morning hours instead. I’ve heard the waning moon can be just as lovely before sunrise. 🌘 Have you ever caught one then?

I don’t think so. I’m also not an early riser, well yes, I’m up around six but not at dawn.

I’m only up that early because one of our dogs has a very early alarm clock and will not settle back down to go to sleep. I do nap!

Oh, I wish I had time for a nap. My nap always takes more than 1:30 h

Thank you, John! 😊 I think the moon needs a better PR team for the early birds among us—maybe a sunrise edition of moon magic! 🌄 If you ever do catch one, I’d love to hear what it feels like to see it with fresh morning eyes.

Thank you for capturing and sharing what I could not, Ilze. It’s been too cloudy here.

Aw, Mary, I’m glad I could bring a little piece of it to you! 🌕 It’s so frustrating when the clouds hide these special nights. Maybe next month will be clearer for both of us. Do you follow the moon phases too?

I do, to a point. I get news clips about it but rarely actually see it.

I think my dream would be to capture it with my digital camera, not a phone.. It might take more than a few years 🙂

It sure is wonderful! I think I need to set some goals in life 🙂 To catch a perfect image of Strawberry moon – it might take a decade – cloudy, rainy, something else, and it’s out only once in the year 🙂
