I cut all the tops of the pumpkin plants, hoping they will grow strong and be ready soon. Tops look so beautiful, full of promise—I’m even thinking about putting them in a vase just to enjoy them indoors for a little while. There’s something magical about seeing the garden transition from summer to autumn, and the pumpkins really highlight that change.

While exploring the greenhouse jungle, I found two melons hiding among the leaves! I’m not sure if they will be fully ready, but I’ll wait and see. It’s always a little thrill to discover these surprises tucked away among the plants.

Later, I had another lovely meal outside in the garden. Wrapped snugly in a blanket, I refused to say goodbye to summer, lingering a little longer in the soft evening light. I enjoyed a simple but comforting cucumber and tomato salad with pearl barley and minced pork sauce. It felt like the perfect way to honor the last warm days, eating slowly and savoring each bite while listening to the faint rustle of leaves in the breeze.

I noticed the tomatoes outside starting to blush red, but I worry they might not fully ripen. The air feels crisp, and I have a feeling the first frost could arrive next week. I really hope it holds off a little longer—I want to enjoy the garden’s bounty just a bit more before autumn fully settles in. There’s a bittersweet feeling in these days: the joy of harvest mingled with the gentle reminder that summer is slipping away.

I hope we can get a few tomatoes and pumpkins. This year has been challenging.

Thank you, Derrick 🌿 I’m hoping too! Do you have any pumpkins or tomatoes growing this year, or do you prefer enjoying them from the market instead?

How lovely! And yes, it is a thrill to find these treasures tucked beneath the plants! A miracle that never grows old 🙂 I am loving these cooler, fall like days!

It really does feel like a little miracle each time, doesn’t it? 🍈✨ The cooler days are a relief, though I already miss the long evenings. Do you have a favorite fall activity you look forward to when the season turns?

I love it all, Ilze. Making soups in my kitchen to freeze for the winter months, picking apples for applesauce and apple crisp. Hayrides and bonfires and long Sunday leaf peeping adventures. Sweaters and pumpkin cappucinos 🙂 I welcome the shorter days when I can stay cozy inside with my books and puzzles in the evenings.

Oh the joy of discovering hidden fruit! Tomatoes will also ripen on a windowsill – I think I once wrote a post about green tomatoes about 14 years ago!

Oh, that’s such a good reminder about ripening tomatoes indoors! My grandmother did that! 🍅 I might have to try that if the frost comes too quickly. I’d love to read your post about green tomatoes—do you still remember what recipe or use you enjoyed most with them?

I hope the frost doesn’t get your tomatoes. Be watchful.
