The first day of school is here! The kids are going back, and as always, it feels a little bit crazy for our family. You know how it is – we work from home, and usually we don’t have to go anywhere early in the morning. Suddenly, September arrives, and everything changes.

Now it’s time to drive the kids to school and try to adjust to this new rhythm. The hardest part? The early mornings. I’m aiming for a 6:45 AM wake-up and being in bed by 10 PM… but sometimes I wonder if I’m really that type of person. Honestly, I don’t think Jānis is either. 🙂
Still, we’ll figure it out, like we always do. First days (read: first semester) are always the toughest, but also the most exciting – a fresh start for the kids, and for us too.
Helmī had to choose German or French; she chose German, so the class changes, and only a few kids will be from previous years. Will see how it turns out.

I love the fogs and greenery there, too. Your kids are adorable. All the best for their studies.

Thank you, Hazel. When does school start in your part of the world?

It started in June and ends in March the next year. So different in every part of the world. My pleasure, Ilze

Our school year runs from September 1st to May 30th, followed by a three-month summer break

Oh, your summer break there is longer than here. We only have two months of school break, which are April and May.

I think only a few countries in Europe have such a long summer break…

You have raised three lovely daughters – Janis and you can be very proud methinks! How old – I have my guesses but don’t want to put them down lest I am abysmally wrong! And, I am not being funny – talk about genes > they look Latvian, and I have two Latvian cousins and have been in Latvian company enough to know 🙂 ! You are quoting hours which I presently have to keep also – and they don’t necessarily agree with me either 🙂 ! Helmi’s choice of German is practical – but I did French and loved it.

🙂 Well… Russian or German, what it used to be… we chose German. Then Russia started the war in Ukraine, and Latvia decided to get rid of the aggressor language in schools! So Linna (by the way, estonian word, that means ‘city limits’or something like that) chose German, but we would anyway. So Helmī was the only one who got French and German option, but since 2 kids are learning German, she chose German 🙂 So… I don’t know German… we have friends in Germany 🙂

I joined my daughter’s BBQ with her friends yesterday. Some talked about the same. The children stayed up late and got up late all summer. One week before school started, they had to go to bed early to prepare for the school schedule.
Your girls looked like they had no problems starting the day early, Ilze. I think German is harder than French.

🙂 I woke them at 6:45 and the picture is around 8:00 … plenty of time to wake up 🙂 German is not easy… some say Latvian is hard 🙂

I hope your daughter enjoys learning German. She can switch in another semester if she wants. 😊

No, she can’t switch 🙂 Or maybe she can… but that is not an option if I’m a mom 🙂
