Looking for Hosting Advice

I haven’t been very active lately… There’s a lot I could share, but I guess most of it will stay on my hard drive and never see the light of day.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about moving away from WordPress.com and trying WordPress.org. I won’t be hosting it on my own server, so I’m exploring hosting options.

If your blog is self-hosted, I’d love to hear about your experience!

  1. Have missed your posts but, as I do not have my own blog, unfortunately cannot give advice – since I have so enjoyed news from ‘up north’ – do hope you find a way which makes you content! Be well . . .

  2. Hi Ilze. Several years ago I used Go Daddy to host my blog at the time. Learning the new Admin panels was easy. It’s amazing how many more in-depth areas of your website’s design are now available to you. Using, uploading Plugins was great too. However, after a while I decided to return to WordPress.com for the simple reason that I can still use plugins and have far more photo storage using the Business Plan. It’s not cheap but is easier to use. I no longer must manage the “back end” of my site. I hope this helps you, Ilze. 😊

  3. We have already corresponded about the issue. Although my local advisers now manage the site for me I still have to pay WP subscription, in order to access everything from 13 years. I don’t know enough to do anything different, so this may not be very helpful to you.

  4. Why do you think you need to move? What WP plan are you on now? I’m on the Premium plan and when I looked all the plans including going to WP.org, it didn’t make sense to change. As I understand it WP.org is geared towards businesses, I didn’t need the extra services or pay the higher price. 🙂 If you do self-host, take your time to find the right host, several people I’ve met over the years changed their host several times due to ongoing issues.

    1. Thank you! This is helpful! I once had a self-hosted site 🙂 And I loved the freedom, and I had a small candle shop for the Latvian market 🙂 I ended that business, so I canceled the site.

      1. If you not a business, WP.org may not be the option. It’s a lot more expensive and has features you not need to blog. If your blogging for free, check out the other plans. I’ve been on the Premium plan for years along with paying for my URL, I spend about $130-140 dollars. You don’t have to buy your personlized URL. 🙂

        1. I’m on Premium with this blog as well. My storage is already at 38%, so I’m not sure how long the “free space” will last. Photos are really what I love to share most!

  5. Ilze, I used one.com for quite a while — I think their servers were in Sweden back then. It’s been over ten years, but at the time they were one of the most affordable hosts with plenty of space and solid options for running WordPress. Never had any issues, and the one time I needed help with a database hiccup, support was fast and sorted it out right away. Honestly, I was really happy with them and only left because I retired and started trimming expenses. Looking at it now, I kind of wish I hadn’t. Just my two cents — worth checking them out, it won’t cost you anything to have a look.

    1. I hoped you would give your 5 cents 🙂 you are the one with Tech background 🙂 Thank you, Marc! I will check. The previous time, 4 years ago, I hosted on my husband’s server somewhere in Germany. It was more like a space for storage, but we made it work 🙂 It cost 8 euros per month 🙂 I bet there isn’t any service that is cheap. I’ll check the one.com! Thank you!

  6. Hello, saw your blogpost I’m selfhosted. I was on blogger and wordpress free, having my own place is still the best for me. I learned a lot over time. I wanted to move to another url and had to do that myself because my website was too big. That was a low point but one ‘dot’ com helped me. In English they are available 24/7! Choosing my own url, change a layout myself and in the end payed for a good one, I will never go back. Blogging is a hobby and those cost money right? Before I was at a cheap place missing support, I started in 2010, move is ow 5 years a go. WOnt change a thing. Hope this is helpfull.

    1. Thank you, Mary. That is the reason why I’m starting to look now…not when I hit the limit of the space. It’s convenient to open the Reader and have all the bloggers in one feed.
