The journey with my rhubarb started on February 25th, when I decided to sow rhubarb seeds that I got as a birthday gift. 🙂
Someone probably thought it would be a funny joke… but clearly they forgot who they were giving them to. I absolutely love growing things from seed, so of course I took it seriously.
I sowed the seeds on February 25th, and by March 1st they had already started to germinate. The variety is called Rhubarb LIDER RED, and honestly, they grew much better than I expected. By April I had eight healthy little plants growing in plugs on my windowsill.

This weekend, I finally planted the seedlings outside.
And that’s when I discovered something important about rhubarb…
Mine were definitely not growing neatly inside their little plugs. When I tried to remove them, the roots snapped. Just like that, my eight rhubarbs became four.
Oops.

Four would be plenty….Now we wait and see if the remaining ones survive and continue growing. I really hope they do, because growing rhubarb from seed feels strangely exciting. There’s something very satisfying about starting with a tiny seed in February and then planting out an actual plant in spring. That will provide rhubarbs for my whole life 🙂

I’ll try to keep you updated on how they do… but you know me. I’m usually far too busy trying to keep everything alive to remember documenting it all properly. 🙂
