A Lovely Day in Līgatne

This week I had the chance to travel to Līgatne for a work meetup. Most of my workdays are spent at home, sitting behind a screen, so it was a nice change of pace to get out, meet people in person, and spend a day somewhere different.

The meetup took place at Zeit, and I have to say, I really liked it. The location is beautiful, surrounded by nature and filled with a calm atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and enjoy the moment. It felt like one of those places where everything just fits together naturally. Even when it’s rainy.

Līgatne itself is always worth a visit. The winding roads, the greenery, and the feeling of being tucked away among the hills make it a special place. Even though I was there for work, it didn’t feel like work all the time. There was something refreshing about stepping away from my usual routine and spending the day in such a pleasant environment.

It’s easy to forget how many beautiful places we have right here in Latvia. Sometimes all it takes is a work event, a meeting, or a small reason to leave home and discover a place that reminds you of that.

I’m glad I went. Good conversations, a lovely location, and a day spent in one of Latvia’s beautiful corners — not a bad combination at all.

P.S Out of comfort zone, for sure 🙂

    1. It really is, John. Those tall pines make the whole place feel quiet and sheltered. Latvia has many forests, but some spots have a special atmosphere, and Līgatne is definitely one of them.

Do you have a favorite forest, in your hometown?

    1. Thank you, Mags. I’m glad the photos could capture a little of the feeling of the day. It was one of those places where everything looked calm and fresh, especially after the rain.

What kind of scenery do you enjoy most—forests, mountains, lakes, or the coast?

      1. I love trees, lakes and mountains. Where I live there are a lot of those. My home sits at the foot of a mountain surrounded by trees. Two creeks near me a lakes not far.

  1. Glad I finally reached you at the end of my day to say how very glad I am you not only took part but enjoyed the occasion! (Oh, I have a firewall in this big building which regards ‘everyone’ as an ‘enemy’!) Lovely spring/summer scenery to boot . . . next time you won’t even think about it . . . you know you can . . .

    1. Thank you, Eha. I’m glad I pushed myself to go. Remote work makes it easy to stay in my own little bubble, so days like this are a good reminder that I can step outside it and actually enjoy it. And yes — I think next time the hesitation will be smaller.

Do you still enjoy attending gatherings and events?

    1. Thank you! It was a really nice place to spend the day. I hope you have a great weekend too, hopefully with a bit of nature and fresh air somewhere along the way.

Do you have a favorite place to escape to when you need a break from everyday life?

      1. Hi Ilze,

Not really one specific favorite place, although I seem to spend quite a bit of time around a small airfield not too far from where I live. Besides the surrounding nature, the airfield itself is home to several historic warbirds, including a Spitfire, a Mustang and a number of other classic aircraft. As someone who has always been fascinated by aviation, that is certainly part of the attraction as well.

The area is full of traces from both World War I and World War II, old bunkers, military structures, and even a former WWI fort.

What I find fascinating is how nature has gradually reclaimed much of it. You can still feel the military history in the landscape, but at the same time it has become a haven for wildlife. By Belgian standards at least, it feels surprisingly wild. 🙂

It is one of those places where history and nature have somehow learned to coexist, which makes every walk a little different.

        1. I have to admit, seeing a Spitfire and a Mustang would definitely make me stop and look! As far as I know they are from USA!? 😊 There is something special about historic aircraft.
I love seeing how nature takes over what we no longer need!

          1. The Spitfire is British and the Mustang is American. 🙂 However, both are powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and share that same unmistakable roar!

    1. That’s the perfect word for it — refreshing. A day away from screens, surrounded by trees and good conversations, can do wonders for the mind.

What do you find most refreshing—a walk in the garden, a good book, or perhaps a change of scenery? 😊
