The First Cucumbers of the Year

There is something special about picking the very first cucumber from the greenhouse.

They are not the perfectly straight, glossy cucumbers you see in supermarkets. One is a little crooked, another has a funny shape, and they certainly wouldn’t win any beauty contests. But to me, they are perfect.

They were grown without chemicals, watered with pond water, and cared a little (I know, I can care more). Every cucumber feels like a little reward for all those quiet moments spent in the greenhouse.

I only had enough time to wash them before Helmī appeared. She happily grabbed one and, before I knew it, had already eaten half of our tiny harvest. I suppose that is the best compliment a gardener can receive!

There will be plenty more cucumbers in the coming weeks, but the first harvest always tastes different. Fresher, sweeter, and somehow filled with the excitement of summer.

Sometimes the most beautiful vegetables are not the most perfect-looking ones. They are the ones grown with patience, sunshine, and a little love.

  1. Talk about a fabulous harvest – they are BIG! And juicy . . . and tasty . . . and healthy > worth the early work! Wonderful !!!

    1. An hour later – am laughing – have just put in a large Amazon order (hate them but they have everything and deliver overnight!) – guess what > Latvian seafood galore added – love the cod pate 🙂 !

      1. Now I want one too!!! 😍 On a slice of fresh bread with onion rings on top!

I had no idea you could get them on Amazon. 😊

You’re spoiled! 😂 If I order something from Amazon Germany, I have to wait a whole week for it to arrive… A WHOLE WEEK! 😄

        1. Ilze – your BANGA company seems to be in their ‘good books’ here – about 4-5 different herrings and anchovies and cod liver pate etc. I belong to AMAZON Prime > it costs just under $10 a month and everything possible is hurried thru’ overnight > and I pay NO freight which would be just over $10 !! Since I get 1-2 parcels a month and the Prime gives me free books and free music and the overnight transport 🙂 ha-ha !!! I bought 16 items (vitamins, chocolate, sea weed snacks, the fish etc this afternoon – have already had two notes back from them – everything except one substance I take (Astaxanthin) will be here in the country tomorrow by lunch 🙂 ! And, yes, onion rings on top for me also 🙂 !
