The weather is getting colder, but honestly… it is still way too warm for October.
We even had 17°C at one point. Seventeen! In October. And I somehow managed to collect zucchini twice after I had already decided that the normal growing season was over. The garden clearly didn’t get the memo.

The air is damp now, but we still get sunny days, and I am trying to enjoy every one of them. The rains seem to be holding back for a while, yellow leaves are starting to come off the trees, and everything has that strange feeling of being somewhere between seasons.

I can feel it in the garden.
It has paused.
It is waiting for the frost.
The funny thing is that some silly zucchini are still blooming, as if they have absolutely no idea what is coming. And the nasturtiums are doing their best to bring summer back with their bright little flowers.

But I’m no fool.
The gray and boring autumn is around the corner.
Once we get the first proper frost, the colored leaves usually don’t stay for long. They often drop the very next morning, and suddenly all that beautiful autumn color is gone.

So for now, I am soaking it all up.
And I’m going to enjoy these last little pieces of summer for as long as the Mother Nature lets me.

Enjoy it while it lasts. It’s even cooled down a bit here in Spain.
What!? Cooler? Come one! But than again, UK last two summers are surprise to everyone! Now it’s 10C and will be up to 16C 🙂
Actually our temperatures were quite similar today as we went from 8C to 19C, during on of the colder days of spring 🙂 ! But where I live methinks we did not have a single day of frost in the winter just past and oft there may be just 2-3 days of a minus temperature whilst one is still in bed . . . don’t know how much I would like to be colder . . . 🙂 !
I think you are right about the leaves, Ilze. They will hang on until we get frost and then suddenly one day they will be gone.
… in the mud… and the long waiting period will start 🙂
Lovely photos, Ilze! Sure enough the cold will come. The weather is a bit warmer than usual for October here too, even in the desert. 98F today but rain is coming and highs in the 70s which is nice.
Too nice 🙂 I think a lot of people here are depressed because of weather… Imagine 7AM woking up and it’s dark till around 9-10AM, then at 3-4PM it will be dark soon… (Thats November/December for us).
Your photographs are absolutely beautiful, Ilze, and I love the way your prose echoes the waiting in-between the seasons.
Nice to still find some courgettes. The red leaves are lovely, and very autumnal.
We’ve had hot Octobers for the last couple of years. After a brutally hot summer this year, I am loving the cooler temps and the color in the trees 🙂
