There’s something incredibly heartwarming about enjoying fresh, vegetables straight from your own garden. The satisfaction of knowing exactly where your food comes from and the care that went into growing it is truly special. 🌱

But what if you don’t have a garden? Don’t worry! There are still ways to enjoy fresh, locally-grown produce directly from local farmers. This way, you support sustainable farming practices and enjoy the freshest produce available, even without a garden of your own.
And what better way to use those fresh vegetables than in a comforting, homemade dish? Here’s a recipe that brings back fond memories of summer meals at my grandmother’s table. It’s a simple, yet incredibly nourishing stew made with fresh, young vegetables—perfect for a light and wholesome meal.
Grandma’s Summer Stew
This recipe from kitchen of my Grandmother Agāfija.

Ingredients
- 6 small new potatoes
- 2.5 cups chopped young cabbage
- 1 cup sliced young carrots
- 2/3 cup fresh peas
- 1/2 cup water
- Salt, to taste fresh dill and sour cream – it’s Latvian kitchen 🙂
Directions
- Start by cleaning all the fresh vegetables. Cut the potatoes into small cubes, slice the carrots into rounds, and chop the cabbage.
- In a pot, layer the vegetables: start with the carrots at the bottom, then add the potatoes, followed by the peas, and finally, top it off with the chopped cabbage.
- Sprinkle the vegetables with salt, pour in 1/2 cup of water, cover the pot with a lid, and let the stew simmer gently.
- After 8-10 minutes, check the stew and give it a stir. If the vegetables are tender, it’s ready to serve. If not, cover the pot again and continue simmering until done.
- Once the stew is cooked, sprinkle it with fresh dill and top with sour cream. Add more salt if needed.

A fine advocacy for fresh, locally grown vegetables. We have a wonderful farm shop

I’m happy to hear that you have the farm shop, not everyone has this luxury. It’s interesting, when I grow up we had our field with potatoes, carrots, cabbages etc, and my parents worked jobs, but still had the field…
