Every autumn, our family gathers for the potato harvest, a beloved Latvian tradition. This year, after a half day of hard work, we enjoyed dinner, a sauna, and a relaxing soak in the hot tub and cold pond. The girls worked hard and had fun, but the day took a bittersweet turn when we discovered a newborn field mouse, its nest destroyed by the tractor.

Nelle, determined to save it, brought the tiny, 2-3 cm mouse home. With the help of me and the internet, she’s been carefully feeding it with a paintbrush and kitten formula. We’ve explained how fragile the situation is, but Nelle is committed to giving the little one a chance.

For now, the mouse has survived three days, and we’re hoping for the best. If it makes it, we’ll have quite the mix at home—alongside our cat Marley.
Fingers crossed for Nelle and her tiny charge!
Ilze

I understand the intention to help. But you could have advised her to leave it in peace in the grasses. Forced help is not help- one of my posts which you can check out.

We actually found the baby mouse after it had been thrown out of its nest, and a tractor was about to pass over it while we were digging potatoes. It was only about two days old, and we couldn’t just leave it there. We felt like giving it a chance. Have you ever had a situation where you had to make a quick decision like that? I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on that kind of dilemma.
