One of the things I love most about this time of year is bringing home little gifts from the garden.
Last night, I came inside with an armful of fresh harvest – cucumbers, string beans, and everything needed for fermented food: horseradish leaves, blackcurrant leaves, and plenty of fresh dill heads. The zucchini plants have become incredibly generous too, and there always seems to be another one waiting to be picked. I started to pick then small.
But if I’m honest, vegetables aren’t my favourite part. The real stars of the garden are the flowers. Especially the sweet peas.

Their fragrance is simply magical. Zinnias are beautiful too, but nothing comes close to a bouquet of sweet peas. Their scent fills the whole room and instantly lifts my mood.
Jānis has been working late because of the time difference between Latvia and Canada. Last night, I picked a fresh bouquet and brought it to his desk to brighten his evening.

He looked surprised, took the flowers, smiled, and said, “Nice fragrance.”
Such a small gesture… but somehow those are often the nicest moments.

What a nice treat!
Thank you!
I remember when we first came to Australia . . . I went to school, Dad went to work . . . Mother was dreadfully unhappy in this new land of ours . . . used to much better days she just stayed at home and felt very lonely > her very favourite thing tho’ – she erected long, long fence-high frames along each side of our back garden and sowed the very long-blooming sweet peas all along the line about 2 1/2 metres high . . . the whole back garden smelled beautiful and we always had flowers to take along when we went to visit friends . . . a somewhat sad but lovely memory . . .
Thank you for sharing, Eha! I don’t think I’d adapt very well either. 😊 I guess I’ll just have to create some arches or other supports so I can make room for even more sweet peas in my garden!
I very much agree with the last sentence in your post. Lize. All of those flowers are beautiful
Thank you, Mags 🙂 Need to grow more, I like to pick my own flowers.
My name is actually I L Z E and it’s pronounced something like ill-the 🙂
You are welcome. Sorry I misspelled your name. I need to slow down when typing. Thank you for telling me how it is pronounced, I had wondered about that. Hugs
