Chanterelles and Gravy: A Culinary Tradition

I recently set out on a mushroom-hunting adventure, and I’m thrilled to report that I found a few chanterelles! Just enough to whip up a delicious mushroom gravy, a staple in every Latvian household. There’s something so comforting about this dish, especially when served with creamy mashed potatoes.

I can’t help but reminisce about a time when we didn’t have enough potatoes at home. My brother ended up having to eat his chanterelles with rice instead. Let’s just say he was less than thrilled about it! I still chuckle thinking about his reaction: “Rice? With chanterelles? Come on!” It’s funny how something as simple as the right pairing can make all the difference in a meal.

Mushroom gravy with potatoes is a beloved tradition, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share it with my family. As autumn settles in, I’m looking forward to cozy meals that celebrate the flavors of the season and the joy of foraging. Here’s to more chanterelle hunts and the delicious dishes they inspire! 🍄🥔

    1. You might think it’s easy to spot them among the green moss… but it’s not! Everywhere you look, you see what seems like chanterelles, but they’re just yellow birch leaves

        1. Maybe you’ve got a bit of Latvian in you—1/10 perhaps! We have goulash, minced meat gravy, Stroganoff, and many other kinds of gravies to enjoy.
