Chasing the Northern Lights

I can’t believe the northern lights reached Latvia this week—and I missed them! 😭

My colleagues were lucky enough to catch the stunning display and took some incredible photos of the glowing greens and purples lighting up the sky. It’s rare for us to see something like this, so I’m feeling a bit of sad. The weather wasn’t right over our heads that night. At least I have their beautiful pictures to admire!

But there’s hope! The forecast says the northern lights might be visible again tonight around 19:00. I’m not missing out this time—I’ll be outside, eyes on the sky, ready to catch the magical display! Fingers crossed for a clear view. 🤞✨

  1. A beautiful photo, Ilze! I have seen the lights just once back in the 1990s in Michigan, it was amazing! I see that you use the 24 hour system like most of Europe does I am guessing. We use the 12 hour system here. I understand the 24 hour system, you are at 7PM local time.

    1. Thank you! Seeing the lights must have been such a magical experience—I’m sure it was unforgettable! Yes, we do use the 24-hour system here in Latvia, like much of Europe. It’s great that you’re familiar with it! I’m “fluent” in both 😀

                    1. We have that ridiculous Daylight Saving Time, many Americans want it to end as it now serves no purpose. Some states like Arizona next door to Nevada, wisely don’t follow that nonsense. Getting dark at 4:30PM is so dumb.

                    2. We collected the votes.. . but got “into a fight” (disagreement is better). One side wanted this time – “summer time”, the other “old Latvian” time, that is after “winter time”. I want to stop this clock-turning madness, but I don’t want the “wintertime” stuck forever!!!

    1. I know exactly how you feel! It’s always a bit disappointing when you miss out, especially after seeing all the incredible photos online. But hopefully, there will be another chance soon! The Northern Lights are always worth the wait. 🙂

  2. Your friends image is beautiful! I can’t believe that we got to see it here in No. Nevada a couple of times. I missed the first two times, but I got this last one on the 10th. It’s amazing to see and photograph. I read it does occasionally happen over Latvia so get an app that will alert you so hopefully will be able to see them when the solar activity is intense.

  3. The Northern Lights have been visible in Ohio, USA twice this year. Each time I ran out with my phone to capture the beauty others seemed to photograph so effortlessly. I set my camera to night mode and ended up with photo after pitch black photo, lol. As you said, I can at least enjoy other people’s pics 🙂

    1. I totally understand the struggle! Capturing the Northern Lights can be surprisingly tricky, especially with a phone. They often need a longer exposure time, which many phone cameras struggle with. It’s so nice that you got to experience them in person, though—that’s a memory in itself! And yes, sometimes it’s just easier (and less frustrating) to enjoy everyone else’s beautiful shots. 😊
