Just got my dream lens, the Canon 100-500mm, and I couldn’t be more excited! I hadn’t been so into photography for the last few years, but now, I can feel that old spark coming back.
Getting this lens wasn’t easy. With all the house renovations, I’d been saving up and was close to putting the money toward construction costs instead. But my husband—who, despite being between jobs, has been incredibly supportive—said, “Are you crazy? This is why you saved up! Buy it!” I love him for encouraging me to follow my passion.
It’s been a long wait since the end of October, but it’s finally here! I’ve been dreaming of capturing deer and birds up close, though being under the weather has kept me mostly indoors. And, of course, autumn has been its usual rainy, gray self.

Still, I couldn’t resist a quick 5-minute outing with my new lens, bundled up like it was mid-winter—jumper, coat, scarf, mittens, and hat. Even though I’m still recovering, it felt amazing to get outside with my camera, even for just a few minutes. Here’s to more photo adventures ahead!

Ilze congratulations! that is a very sought after lens and for good reason, it is an optically excellent lens. I hope you have fun with it. I did not realize you liked photography. I am an enthusiast of the art but I also have my dream lenses. I just obtained one of them 2 weeks ago so I understand your happiness 🙂 here’s the link to my post about my dream lenses: https://michaeljosephwilliams646.wordpress.com/2024/07/19/lens-dreams/#comments

Thank you so much, Mike! I’m thrilled with the lens, and I can’t wait to capture the nature around me. There’s something so peaceful and inspiring about photographing the world as it is. I had a photo studio for a while, but then I chose to close it and put my camera on the shelf for about 3 years. Now I’m excited to get back into it! I’ll definitely be taking plenty of pictures. I’m excited to check out your post about your dream lenses too, and I can relate to that feeling of happiness when you finally get your hands on one! Looking forward to sharing my shots with you soon!

Thank you! I’m really excited about it! I have a 2x extender… for sunny days this combo might work 🙂 I can already imagine all the beautiful moments it will help me capture. Hopefully, I’ll get some great shots soon, though I’m still a bit under the weather and coughing (they heard me 🙂 )

Hey Ilze, for just five minutes outside, you’ve captured a beautiful shot of deer! I’ve also managed to get some nice deer photos myself, though Belgium is quite different from Latvia – nature here is scarce, at least where I live. However, by using camouflage or green clothing, I’ve been able to get within a few meters of them – sometimes so close that it’s actually too near to take a good shot!
Anyway, enough about me. Congratulations on your new lens! Bird and wildlife photography is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Even if you don’t capture a single photo, the ‘hunt’ itself, that heartbeat when a deer looks at you from ten meters away – it’s a feeling that words can’t quite describe.
All the best,
Marc.

Thank you so much, Marc! I feel very lucky to have deer in my field; they come every evening to eat, so I often get to see them right from my window. It did take me a bit longer to dress to avoid getting cold, though, especially since I’m still ill and coughing! But it was worth it to capture that moment.
I agree with you—wildlife photography is incredibly rewarding, and even the process itself is so special. I can only imagine how thrilling it must be to get that close to the deer! Your experiences sound amazing. Thanks again for the congratulations, and all the best to you too!

Thank you! The main reason I got this lens is to capture wildlife in all its detail. The weather might not be good for that now… But I hope for sunny winter days 🙂

With that lens you may well capture good shots through the window when you can’t get out.
