Amanita Muscaria and the Beauty of Nature Close to Home

I stumbled upon a beautiful Amanita muscaria right next to our house recently. What a sight! It’s such a stunning mushroom, with its bright red cap and white spots—definitely a showstopper. Of course, we all know it’s poisonous, but it still adds something magical to the landscape. I love how nature keeps inching closer to our home, bringing these little surprises right to our doorstep.

It’s funny because we had planned to cut down some of the young trees around the house. The aspens and birches are growing too close together – too much in one place. They seeded here. We want to cut them down and plant something better – like an oak tree or some sort of maple. But now, seeing this Amanita muscaria, I’m reconsidering. Maybe we don’t need to cut everything down. I’m thinking of leaving a few of the bigger trees to stand and give the place a bit more character.

Nature has a way of reminding me to slow down and appreciate the beauty in the little things. Maybe we’ll keep some of those trees after all—nature has its own plans, and I’m starting to love watching it unfold right outside our window.

  1. What a wonderful surprise! I like all of your trees but do consider planting a maple. Mine gives me shade in the summer and a gorgeous display of color in the fall. It is a sugar maple and I could even have syrup if I knew anything about tapping it, lol.

    1. Thank you! 😊 That mushroom really does look like a treat, doesn’t it? Nature has such a delightful way of surprising us. As for the house, it does look quite big in photos, but it’s all about the angles! We’ve been working hard to bring it back to life—it’s been such a labor of love. Have you ever found something in nature that made you do a double take, like that mushroom? 🍄🍬

Our house is an old Latvian home, built in the traditional style where the living quarters, barn, and “stable” were all under one roof. We’ve turned half of the house into our living space, while the other half will serve as a garage and storage area. It’s been an incredible journey blending the old with the new!

          1. Me either, yuck. I look forward to seeing your finished home some day, Ilze. Your beautiful manor! By the way, your mastery of the English language spelling is still amazing me. Do you also speak English?

  2. Agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment that nature reminds us to slow down and notice the little moments. We found a wee cluster of amanita muscaria growing under the tree opposite our house, I told my daughters they’re fairy houses. ☺️

    1. That’s such a lovely thought, and I completely agree—nature has a magical way of slowing us down and helping us see the beauty in small moments. Amanita muscaria really do look like something out of a fairy tale! Your daughters must have loved the idea of them being fairy houses. 😊 I bet they’ll keep an eye on that tree, hoping to spot some fairy visitors! 🧚‍♀️🍄
