Yesterday brought an unexpected delight to our bird feeder—a visit from the Dendrocopos medius, the Middle Spotted Woodpecker. What a sight he was, with his striking red crown standing out vividly against his black-and-white feathers. He seemed almost regal, perched confidently as if he knew how stunning he looked.

I stood there, mesmerized. his movements are quick and purposeful. Moments like these remind me why I keep the feeder full—it’s a simple act that brings nature closer. I’m hoping he becomes a regular visitor. Perhaps next time, it will be sunny to get the pictures more sharp, noise free!
Do you get any interesting visitors to your bird feeders? Let me know—I’d love to hear about them!

A great shot. We don’t use bird feeders any more because squirrels dominate them

Oh, I wish there were squirrels 🙂 I think I need to add nuts to the mixture 🙂

WHAT!? Can’t believe it! Really!?

I’m afraid so. It has started on daffodil bulbs but just chucks them out and makes a mess

I still can’t believe it! They are adorable, but still wild animals. 😊 I’ve heard from many followers who stopped feeding birds because of woodpeckers, magpies, squirrels, and even bears! My main concern, though, is my own cat!

We have many birds come throught the year. We have two types of woodpeckers and we’ve had Hawks come to drink and bath in the birdbath. I love both birds, I like all birds, hummingbirds are great but I haven’t put out food in years. 🙂

Wow, it sounds like your yard is a haven for wildlife! Two types of woodpeckers and even hawks—how incredible! 😊 I wish we had hummingbirds. They are such a joy to watch (as seen online). It’s amazing how nature always finds its way to us, isn’t it? 🐦✨

We’ve had genrations of hawks here at one time, they are Red Tail Hawks and they are my favorite. Their majestic birds.

I love them and there’s something mystical about when they loose a tail feather that I collect them. I’m not a mystical person but the Red Tail Hawk is special.

Even if you’re not a mystical person, it’s hard not to feel a sense of connection and wonder with such a special creature!

Thank you so much! 😊 This is the first year in this location for the feeder, so I’m not sure what will come, but I’m excited to find out. Watching the birds is such a joy—it never gets old! 🐦✨

Those pics are awesome! I love those little woodpeckers, I have one or two that like to peck at my maple tree out back. I’ve always just called them redheaded woodpeckers but yes, they are gorgeous and they seem to know it 🙂

Thank you! 😊 It’s so fun that you have woodpeckers visiting your maple tree—they must love it there! “Redheaded woodpeckers” is such a fitting name for them; their colors really are striking. They definitely have a confident charm about them, don’t they? 😄 Do they visit often, or just now and then? 🌳❤️

They come to the tree quite often. Once I fill the feeder with sunflower seeds (I call it The Diner!) they will be regular customers.

This woodpecker is very beautiful bird. We call it “käpytikka” a cone woodpecker. We are feeding birds and a woodpecker is a daily visitor.

I made a mistake earlier—I’ve corrected the name to Middle Spotted Woodpecker, as the belly isn’t a solid color! 😊

Wow, he/she is beautiful! I have seen a Ladder Back woodpecker on my hummingbird feeders, I wonder if they can actually drink the fluid inside? Maybe they have a tongue similar to the hummers. Great photos, Ilze! ❤️

The woodpecker’s tongue is extremely long!!!

That means they can drink the sugar water! I’ve seen the bird on the feeder twice so far.

Yes, they can, but is it what they need? I don’t know. But birds are better than us 🙂 for knowing what they need 🙂

Apparently, the bird’s systems can use the energy in some way, that stuff is incredibly sticky. It even leaves a dark stain on the pavers if you drip it like I did yesterday.

Not always, but usually they know what to do. Do you by the liquid or make simple sugar water to feed them?

Simple sugar water, I have a container that shows you how much sugar and water to add, works every time and they love it!

Yes! Sugar water is the best 🙂
