I’m still into memories of our recent trip to Riga for a party.
After the party, we made our way to Salacgriva to pick up the kids, who had been staying with my mom. But of course, we couldn’t leave without a visit to the sea. It’s something I always need, even though I’m not fond of the sand, read here: https://latvianmom.com/2018/10/22/out-of-side-out-of-mind/. The pines, the view, and the salty mist in the air are what call me.
Standing there in the dunes, with the wind in my hair and the distant sound of the waves, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. It’s funny how the sea, even though it’s not always the most comfortable place for me, brings a calm that I can’t find anywhere else. The pines giving fresh air (the antibacterial compounds released by pines fend off microbial attacks), the salty air—it all felt so familiar, like a part of me that I didn’t realize I was missing.

Even though I don’t love the sand, I always long for that coastal view. The sea has a way of making everything feel right, and it was the perfect way to end our little trip.

Thank you, Derrick! Thank you for asking. Something isn’t right 😦 I feel terrible today; I took the day off, I hope I don’t need to take sick leave – again!

Thank you! I really hope to feel better soon. I just woke up from what was supposed to be a quick 40-minute rest but turned into a 2-hour nap. Now I’m a bit worried about being able to sleep tonight—I usually struggle to fall asleep if I’ve napped during the day. Fingers crossed it won’t be an issue!

It really was! Just a short visit to the sea, but it was sweet and so refreshing—exactly what I needed!

I hope you feel much better very soon, Ilze! 🙏🏻 Lovely photos, what is it about sand that bothers you? Walking barefoot in sand is a great way to take care of your feet!

Thank you so much for your kind words and wishes! 🙏🏻 Sand looks beautiful, but I’ve never been a fan of how it feels—it gets everywhere and sticks to everything! Walking barefoot in sand does sound like a wonderful way to care for your feet, though—maybe I should give it another try! Do you enjoy spending time at the beach?

I haven’t been to a beach in several years, Ilze, I use to go to California with the ex to see her mom which was basically on the Pacific shore. Being diabetic, I get pedicures regularly. Sand strips away the dead skin and cleans your feet up nicely.

It sounds like those beach trips to California must have been special! I love the idea of sand helping to clean and refresh your feet—such a natural way to care for them.

Yes, I haven’t seen the ocean since 2016, it’s a long way there from Las Vegas! 😂

I know what you mean about needing the sea air and sounds from time to time. I grew up 40 mins from the sea and went regularly while growing up. I’ve never been a fan of the sand either. It’s too messy, gritty, and gets into everything! But, I do love the sounds, smell, and watching the waves roll in. We make several trips to the sea a year though I’m much further from the sea now.
I hope you are feeling better soon!

Thank you so much for your kind wishes! It sounds like we share a love for the sea, even if sand isn’t our favorite part of the experience. There’s just something so calming about the sounds and smells of the ocean and watching the waves—it feels like a reset for the soul. How lovely that you grew up close to the sea! Do you have a favorite spot you visit now that you’re further away?
