Have you ever found yourself craving a dish you didn’t grow up with? That’s exactly where my girl Linna is right now. Pies – those golden, flaky creations filled with sweet or savory goodness – seem to have a captured Linnas attention. But here in Latvia, pies aren’t a traditional thing. We don’t have family recipes passed down from our grandmothers, lovingly perfected over generations. So, I’m turning to you, my wonderful community, for help.

I’ve always associated pies with the UK and the USA. They seem to hold a special place in the hearts of those cultures, often linked to warm family memories, celebrations, and holiday traditions. But for me, pies are uncharted territory. That’s why I’m asking you: can you share your go-to pie crust recipe?
I found a few online and just didn’t like them! They were too crumbly, too dry, or too tasteless… or should it be that way?
Also, I’d love to know a little more about the pies in your family. Are they part of your family’s traditions? Do you have a favorite filling or a pie-making story to share?
I can’t wait to hear your tips, stories, and recipes!
Drop your recipes and links in the comments below.
Thank you,
Ilze

Jackie is well able to make pastry, but now buys short crust pastry for her meat pies because she doesn’t think it worth the effort and just as good

That’s a great idea. Unfortunately, we don’t have such an option here. Would you mind asking Jackie to share a shortcrust pastry recipe? I’d love to try it myself! I can search online, but it’s not what I’m looking for 🙂

I’ll ask her, but she doesn’t do recipes as such

She says she hasn’t made it for so long she would just refer to a book or the internet where there are many different ones

There are so many different recipes to choose from—it’s overwhelming! But I hope to find one that feels just right, one I can confidently say is from Lilian, Anne, or Derrick. I’m sentimental like that, and I love adding a personal connection to things. For example, when I baked a cake for my mom’s 65th birthday, I didn’t just call it a simple honey cake—I named it “Omes Mārītes 65” (which translates to “Grandmother Mārīte’s 65th”). It’s not just a dessert; it’s a memory. That way, when my recipe binder is passed down to future generations, they’ll find recipes with names that carry stories, like my mom’s. 😊

Not sure there is a pie crust or just pies? A great site to use for cooking is Food Network, you can find anything there.

Oh, you sent my tastebuds down memory lane! My mom’s chocolate cream pie, and banana cream pies are I two I grew up with. She made a mincemeat pie at Thanksgiving that only her I liked so she made a small one.
My mom wasn’t a great cook, but man could she bake!
I make peach pies and cherry pies. My daughter never cared for birthday cake and always asks for cherry pie instead. It’s hard to get fresh cherries in mid May so I would use frozen or canned.
Now a days I just make crumbles as they’re so much easier than rolling out the dough for crust. My crust is never as good as my Mother’s. Cold water, and butter are the key to getting a good crust.

Honestly, I have no idea how many different types of pie bases are out there! 😄 If you have a favorite pie base recipe, I’d love for you to share it!

I always buy pre-made frozen pastry these days! I take it you are making a savoury pie like we eat in the UK, New Zealand and Australia?
