It all started when I opened my garden planning app and tried to register the plant I had just seeded—rukola (the Latvian name). But guess what? I couldn’t find it!
Can you guess the right name (or at least the one you use)?
Turns out, in a million years, I wouldn’t have thought to look under the name rocket!
Who knew this same leafy green had so many names? Arugula, rocket, roquette, rucola… It’s the same plant, but with a whole bunch of identities depending on where you’re from.
Anyway, lesson learned—rukola is rocket, and now I can finally find it in my app!

Here in Switzerland it’s also Rucola.

I didn’t know you were from Switzerland! Are you visiting? Greetings from Latvia!

I moved to Switzerland over 50 years ago, and am now Swiss (on paper, anyway). I wrote about becoming Swiss on this blog in 2019-2021 if you want to look back at my posts from that time.

That’s a fascinating journey! It must have been quite an experience adjusting to life in Switzerland. I’ll have to check out your posts from that time to read more about it. Was there anything in particular that stood out to you during your process of becoming Swiss? Also, where were you born?

It’s all in those Swissification posts, too long to detail here. Born in England.

Now I’ll definitely need to go there and check them out 🙂

I call it rocket as I am from the UK originally, but when I lived in Denmark it was rucola so I can switch between them.

That’s so interesting! It’s funny how we get used to different names depending on where we live. Do you still find yourself switching between them?

I might use rucola at home but always rocket outside so people know what I am talking about!

Rocket or rucola—either way, it’s delicious. I don’t like it alone, but together in salad – it’s nice!

I’ve always called it arugula, and had no idea there were so many names! But your plants are clearly doing very well!

Right? I was surprised too! I thought I knew what to look for, but turns out, not really. 😄 Do you grow arugula yourself, or do you just enjoy it in salads?

I just enjoy it in salads. I used to grow tomatoes, but the white flies kept killing them. So now I just grow some herbs and buy the rest, sadly.

That sounds lovely! Fresh herbs can make all the difference. White flies are such a challenge—I hope you get to enjoy homegrown tomatoes again someday! 🍅🌿
