The False Spring and the Inevitable Frost

Spring has arrived—or at least, that’s what the past few days wanted us to believe. The sun finally broke through, the air warmed up to a delightful +14°C (57F), even reaching +16°C (60F) in the afternoon. It felt like a reward after the long, dark winter. Birds sang louder, the soil softened, and the first signs of green life pushed through the earth. Crocuses, snowdrops, and even some ambitious trees dared to bud.

Today, the weather is nice and sunny, making it even harder to believe what’s coming. But nature has other plans. The weather forecast tells a harsher truth—a sudden and brutal cold spell is on the horizon. By Sunday, temperatures will drop significantly, bringing bitter nights of -10°C (14F). A week of freezing air will undo everything that just began to wake up. Tender leaves, soft buds, and the first hopeful sprouts will be scorched by frost, erased as if they had never been there.

It’s a reminder that nature moves at its own pace, no matter how much we wish it otherwise.

            1. I wish I still had the “before” pictures from inside! It was in such terrible shape — no one had lived there for 30 years. Renovating it has been a huge accomplishment, especially considering that… but there’s still so much left to do. Not sure we have the same spark when we started 🙂

  1. As Peggy says we are slipping into Autumn. The sun is still quite warm but today I actually put on a pullover over my shirt.
I love the snowdrops and I look forward to the gardening reports.

    1. That sounds lovely—there’s something so cozy about that first pullover day, isn’t there? 🍂 The shift into autumn always brings such a peaceful rhythm. Snowdrops are such a hopeful sign too—they feel like little promises that summer is around the corner.I hope to have time to start the garden and to share it 🙂
