Līgo – The Night When Latvia Glows

There’s something special in the air on Līgo night. The scent of blooming meadows, the hum of insects, the quiet excitement of an ancient celebration getting closer.

Līgo is the evening before Jāņi, and it’s more than just preparation – it’s the build-up of energy. People gather, flower crowns are made, songs are sung in rounds – “Līgo, līgo!” echoing across the fields and forests.

For me, Līgo is all about the atmosphere. You feel it in your bones. The bonfire isn’t just a light – it’s a symbol of the sun, burning at its strongest before it slowly begins to wane. That fire is meant to protect, to cleanse, to bless.

There’s food, of course – cheese with caraway seeds, grilled meats, beer or kvass. But most importantly, there’s togetherness. And that feeling that you’re not just celebrating this year – you’re stepping into something ancient and shared.

Do you feel it too? That strange timelessness in the glow of the fire and the hum of the night?

Līgo, līgo to all of you who carry Latvia in your heart – no matter where you are. Wishing you a night full of warmth, light, and song.
