Next to our home stands an old, dead tree — weathered and bare, yet proud, like a silent guardian watching over us. Sometimes, this tree becomes an unexpected resting spot for storks, and last night was one of those magical evenings.
We spotted a few storks there: one peacefully sleeping, one arriving, another leaving, and one playfully shaking the branch… I’m not quite sure why! I’m guessing it might have had a terrible nightmare and almost lost its balance, so it started wobbling the branch to steady itself and hold its top spot. It was such a funny and charming sight!

I once counted as many as seven storks perched on that tree at the same time — quite the gathering!
I love how nature surrounds us, even right outside our doorstep. Have you ever noticed unexpected wildlife during a late-night walk in your neighborhood? I’d love to hear your stories!

Morning Ilze, late last night I remembered I had left some washing out on the line, when I opened the back door there was a Hedgehog eating the food I had left out for the homeless cats. Was so pleased to see it as it’s been a long time since I’ve seen one in my garden.

That sounds like such a magical surprise! Hedgehogs are such guests of honour at unexpected times. Have you seen them regularly—or was this a one-off magic moment?

Sadly a one off this year, hopefully I will see it again.

Cat food 🙂

People used to say feed them with bread and milk, but apparently it’s not good for them. Cat food wet or dry is much better.

Hello, late last night I heard the cat food dishes outside being rattled around, thought it was the feral Tom cat I feed when he turns up, opened the door and there was the Hedgehog again. It ran off a little way when it saw me, looks really healthy though, so I put some more food out for it.

How lovely, Ilze. I have never seen a stork. I don’t walk in my neighborhood late at night, lol, I’m sure there is some “wildlife” out there 🙂

Thank you! Storks here are kind of local celebrities—they surprise us when they perch so close to home. Do you ever take evening walks in other seasons just to listen or look?

They are beautiful birds! I don’t think that they can carry a baby though. 🤭

Oh, absolutely—not baby carriers—that’s just folklore for another day! Still, watching them gather, settle down, and interact is beautiful in its own way. Do you have a favourite local bird or wildlife sighting?

Thank you so much! I’m always a little surprised my phone camera even managed to freeze the moment. Which photo spoke to you most—and why?
