Vacation Day 2: Ice Cream & Coffee, Furrows & Flower Namesakes

This morning began with something simple and lovely: fresh salad, dill, and crisp cucumbers from our garden, mixed with a touch of salt and kefir. Light, refreshing, and just right—especially before enjoying a coffee with a scoop of ice cream. I love mornings like this—unrushed, soft, a little bit magical.

Afterward, I headed out to the field and dealt with the weeds in the furrows. The beetroots are looking great, and I also cleaned out the purple carrots. I don’t keep my field perfectly tidy—I just go out there whenever I feel like it and do as much as I want. With only four furrows, it feels just right. Manageable, calm. I really love the size of such a small field.

Then I went for a walk with Nelle, and along the way we spotted Ilzītes—the sweet little wildflowers named after me. That felt like a tiny gift from the universe. Also, I managed 10K today!

Yesterday was sofa cleaning day, and today I added the decorative cushion covers to the wash. Can’t wait to put them back to see how it all looks.

It’s all gray now. The morning started sunny, but it feels like we’re just five minutes away from rain—again.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about night curtains. Technically, I don’t need them—there’s no one around to peek in—but curtains make a space feel finished and cozy. Maybe it’s time to pick a fabric I love and give the room that soft, homely look it deserves. Not sure…. but if I do, it will be DIY procject.

  1. Sounds like a day for lowering blood pressure . . . gardening, walking, being outside . . . Curtains – I guess I am a ‘funny’ one > I have to have them closed at night – however silly, I feel ‘unsafe’ when I do not know whether ‘someone’ just may be looking in 🙂 !

    1. That’s exactly how it felt — gentle and calming. I get what you mean about curtains — sometimes they really do add that feeling of safety. Do you have a favorite style or fabric for your curtains?

      1. laughing Plain, neutral and heavy as with most of my decor! I just want to feel cozy and ‘safe’ inside, sure some ‘sick’ person is not following my every move !! Read about your ice cream – have not touched any for decades – with 30 years of learning nutrition at university level – just don’t want the sugar and cream in my system – to each their own 🙂 !

        1. Haha, plain, neutral, and heavy really does sound like the ultimate cozy-and-safe combo! Totally get wanting to feel like your space is your sanctuary. And yes, there are definitely some “sick” people out there, so keeping the curtains closed is smart!

I admire your dedication to nutrition — 30 years is impressive! I try to find my own balance, and an occasional ice cream treat feels like a little moment of joy. To each their own, indeed. 🙂

    1. It’s a fun combo! Have you ever tried affogato — that’s espresso with ice cream? This is kind of similar. What’s your favorite way to enjoy ice cream?

      1. No I have never had affogato. Sounds good, though. I haven’t been eating ice cream this summer since I am trying to eat more intentionally. But before summer ends, I am going to treat myself to a “bubble” at a local ice cream shop. Vanilla ice cream, melted marshmallow topping, chocolate sauce, and the whole thing covered in fresh ground peanuts. It’s heaven 🙂

        1. Sounds like heaven! It’s so good you can control yourself! No ice cream for the whole summer! I think I’m eating around 1 in 2-4 days… almost 2 in a week. Can you give some tips on eating intentionally, please?

          1. I’m normally not very self controlled, Ilze, lol. A recent round of bloodwork showed that I am prediabetic and it was quite a wake up call. I don’t want to let it evolve into Type Two diabetes so I am taking drastic measures right now to try and bring my A1C levels down. It helps that the farmer’s markets are open and I can fill up on fresh, locally grown fruits and veggies 🙂 I find things like watermelon and cantelope, good, natural sugar sources, are satisfying my sweet tooth. But I am definitely going to reward my summer-long sacrifice with an ice cream bubble before the summer ends 🙂

            1. That really does sound like a wake-up call, and it’s great that you’re taking action right away. I’m on the same path… Fresh, local fruits and veggies are such a delicious way to make healthy changes — and I agree, watermelon and cantaloupe feel like nature’s candy! 🍉🍈 I think treating yourself to an ice cream before summer ends sounds like the perfect balance. 🙂 But if you still want, you can freeze the watermelon and melon cubes and then grate them to have ice cream… I like to add a bit of frozen banana and fresh cream 🙂
