Vacation Day 12 – Our 15th Wedding Anniversary

Yesterday was a special one — 15 years since our wedding! 💕

Now, I know many couples celebrate by going out to a nice restaurant, but I’m just not that type. Sitting in a public place, where everyone sees you, hears you, and you have to politely ignore the noise around… nope, not my idea of a romantic evening. I feel far more relaxed in the woods than in a café or restaurant. I guess I’m wild like that 😄

So instead, we celebrated in our own way — at home, surrounded by the little things that matter most. I cooked (not because I had to, we could have ordered, but I didn’t know what I wanted, so I cooked) pasta with veggies from our garden, and we had a lovely dinner outside.

The kids set the table and, to our surprise, gifted each of us a LEGO minifigure set. It was so thoughtful and so us. I got astronaut and Jānis skater…

For dessert, we treated ourselves to a cake from our local homemade goodies shop — the same one that made our wedding cake 15 years ago. Here’s a little secret: the same recipe will be with us again this Saturday. Not the same cake (of course!), but a fresh one, full of the same sweetness and nostalgia. Yesterday, we indulged in a dried fruit meringue nest filled with dulce de leche cream. None of the images shows the inside of the cake. I’m sorry. I was in a sugar coma…

And because apparently romance in our marriage also comes with a healthy dose of home improvement — at the end of the day, we decided to install the curtain pole and I sewed curtains. We started around 10 pm… and finished at 3 am! We couldn’t stop laughing at the thought: 15 years of marriage, and here we are, staying up till the middle of the night for poles and curtains 😄

The curtains were intentionally made shorter than the floor so our vacuum robot can get underneath! Love the color… Again, not a proper image, but I hope you can get the idea.

Sometimes the most perfect anniversaries are the ones spent simply — under the open sky, with the people who make your heart feel at home… and maybe a little DIY at midnight.

    1. Thank you so much! 💛 It really does feel like the little moments matter the most. How do you usually celebrate special days in your family?

  1. I love how you celebrate your wedding anniversary, Ilze. I like that way, too. Open area, in nature. Oh, your flowers look so nice. And your curtain and overall space is beautiful

    1. Thank you, Hazel! We both feel much more relaxed celebrating at home or outside than in a restaurant. I’m glad you like the flowers — the zinnias are still swaying happily in the garden. Do you have a favorite way to celebrate in nature?

      1. I always love nature, and time with my family in nature is always cherished.

We plan to canopy uphill soon. Hope it will be realised.

Happy weekend, Ilze. Youre most welcome

        1. That sounds wonderful! I completely agree — being in nature with family feels so special. “Canopy uphill” – what do you mean, like a tent? Or a zipline? English isn’t my native!
Either way, it must be a beautiful way to enjoy the outdoors. I hope it all works out for you.

Wishing you a lovely weekend too! 🌿

    1. Thank you, Eha! 💛 I love going out sometimes but being at home with the garden, the kids’ little gifts and a late-night curtain project feels just right for us. I just realised I didn’t add the LEGO pictures :)… very important. Do you have a favorite anniversary memory or tradition you enjoy?

  3. Looks like an amazing day! how sweet of your children. And the curtains
look beautiful. Our “full” length curtains stop 1/2 ” above the floor too.

The cats in the cafe (there’s 10!) are indeed very social. We’re not to
pick them up (a rule for kids I guess, who’d pick up a strange cat?) but
they love to be petted and stroked, particularly around the ears. There
were a few single men who seem to be regulars (greeted by the owner) and
I think it’s a safe space for anybody lonely as well as just a lovely
idea. Granddaughter loved it. So did I. I miss our cat.

    Happy Anniversary!

    1. Thank you, Mandy! 💕 Yes, the kids really made the day feel special. I’m glad I’m not the only one with “almost floor-length” curtains — feels intentional now, doesn’t it? 😊

The cat café sounds absolutely wonderful, especially that they’re so friendly. I can imagine how much joy it brought your granddaughter — and you too. Such a sweet idea for people who miss having a cat at home.

And thank you for the anniversary wishes! 🥰
