Our Holidays, Apparently, Are for Building IKEA

I was never a huge IKEA fan, but… it turns out I’m spending quite a lot of money there and even all of our holidays building their furniture.

My first real encounter with IKEA was last summer, when we decided to buy temporary bedroom furniture. It turned out to be easy to install and looked lovely. I really liked it!

I liked it so much that we decided to buy a temporary kitchen as well… for Christmas. The boxes were delivered on Christmas Eve. My brother’s family and my mom came over, and we spent the evening chatting and screwing all the furniture together and installing it. We did it!

On Valentine’s Day we spent the evening building one unit for the bathroom—to store towels—and another one for the living room to store candles. Yes, I now have a separate shelf unit just for candles and candle holders. How fancy is that? 🙂
I think I might need another one just for cutlery.

Jokes aside—guess what we’re doing this weekend?

You guessed it: more IKEA. This time we’re building beds for Linna and Nelle. The space is temporary—downstairs—because we haven’t started building the upstairs yet. But we wanted to get rid of the old mattresses and half-broken beds anyway. I’ll upcycle the materials later, but right now we need to create a “separate room” for Nelle. Teenager life!

It won’t actually be a room with walls, but an enclosed space made from furniture—wardrobes, sideboards, and shelves.

So wish us luck to finish it all before Monday.

Also, it’s one week of school break here in Latvia. And spring is on its way.

    1. It’s impressive how we can change our minds over something 🙂 IKEA won me over, but not for everything, I still want a fair share of “old stuff”, “stuff with history” in my home 🙂

How are you!? Heading to your blog right away 🙂

  1. Lai izdodas. Katram pusaudzim vajaga papildus priekus.

    1. I agree with you! 😊 I looked at the BILLY shelves too, but they’re not quite right for us. I actually have more plates than books, so I’ve been hunting for the perfect sideboard or cupboard for them.

Two girls slept in the IKEA beds for the first time and they absolutely loved it! I think the straight lines and practical use of space are exactly what they’re after…

      Me… as mom – too!

  2. I totally agree with you about IKEA . Somehow, I keep ending up with their stuff, and some of it really lasts – like my Tomallilla sofa and armchair that are now about 30 years old and still going strong, although I can no longer get loose covers for them. Btw, for some reason I can only like or comment on your posts if I access them from the e-mail notification, but not if I access them from he Reader button on my site. Weird! Sorry about that – you would be hearing from me far more often if worked properly!
