Ostara is celebrated around the spring equinox, usually on March 20 or 21, when day and night are almost equal. It marks the moment when the light begins to win over the darkness and the days slowly grow longer.
In many nature-based traditions, Ostara is a celebration of renewal. The earth is waking up after winter. Snow melts, birds return, and the first green shoots appear in the soil. It is a quiet but powerful reminder that life always returns. Symbols connected to Ostara often include eggs, seeds, rabbits, and spring flowers — all representing fertility, growth, and new beginnings.

For many people today, Ostara is simply a moment to pause and notice the change of seasons. A walk in nature, planting seeds, decorating eggs, or bringing fresh flowers into the home can be small ways to mark this turning point of the year.
For our family, it’s Jānis’s birthday! How about that 🙂 Another lovely time in the year. This year, Jānis is turning 40! Finally! Yes, yes, I said finally! I’m older! I was in my 40s for a while and felt alone 🙂 I will share a few pictures…

Since today is my husband’s birthday, it feels like a good moment to pause and write a few words about him. To our children, he is the person who can fix almost anything. To me, he is the calm voice when everything feels chaotic. I remember one evening during the renovation when everything felt impossible, Jānis was the one who calmed me down and took a few nights in a construction site to push through, and not miss the next big step (we had to push, cause concrete filling team showed up 3 days later and we had to do a lot of preparation work. So he took the “night shift” at that. He rarely talks about big plans, but he quietly makes things happen. Our home would not exist the way it does without his patience and stubborn determination. He drinks his coffee black and always asks for more. He is the one who stays up late and checks out the “technical stuff” while I’m up early and dreaming of “nice stuff”!
Happy birthday to my lovely husband!
Happy Ostara to you all!

And Janis . . . congratulations all the way from Down Under for the happiest of days and best of years and more things going right than wrong! Don’t talk about age differences – that between my first long-term husband and I was exactly the same the ‘wrong way’ 🙂 ! Enjoy the Ostara and the birthday cake and the hugs and kisses . . . have fun!

Thank you, Eha! I will enjoy Ostara between Rosols and Herring in Coat making 😉

‘Herring in Coat’ does not bring a specific herring dish to mind, but I love the fish and eat it more than once a week on my breakfast sandwiches. ‘Rosols’ is probably what we call ‘rosolje’ – a beetroot salad with a whole lot of goodies in it ?

🙂 Rosols is something like Olivier salad, and Herring in Coat is layer salad of marinated herring, then fresh onions, boiled potatoes, boiled carrots, and boiled beetroot – all grated and topped with eggs… mayo between layers 🙂
