When the Field Across the Road Began to Change

Oh no… this is not what I expected to feel today!

We chose to live here for a reason. Not for convenience, not for perfect roads or quick access to everything—but for the quiet. For the space. For the feeling that nature is allowed to just be. All around us, there have only been natural fields. No crops, no chemicals, no intensive farming. Just grass growing freely, cut down once or twice a year for hay. A simple rhythm. A peaceful one. Something that felt… safe.

But today, I looked out the window and saw a tractor across the road. Not just passing through—but working. Turning everything upside down. Deep lines carved into the earth where there used to be soft grass moving in the wind.

It’s probably going to become a proper field now. Something planted. Managed. Controlled. And with that comes the question that’s been sitting heavy in my chest all day:

Will there be chemicals?

I don’t know yet. Maybe it will be something gentle. Maybe it will still be respectful to the land. I really, really hope so.

Because once that changes… it changes more than just the view. It’s the air. The soil. The feeling of living in a place where nature is not pushed too hard.

I know change is normal. Land gets used. People farm. This is not wrong. But when you’ve gotten used to a certain kind of quiet harmony, even small changes feel big.

So today I’m just sitting with this uneasy feeling, looking out the window a little more often than usual.

    1. I know the house they’re living in, but I’m not sure if they’ve rented it out or what their plans are. In Latvia, we don’t usually go to people and tell them what they should or shouldn’t do with their property—that’s entirely up to them. Still, I can’t help feeling a bit sad… I’m losing a perfect “no-chemicals” spot.

  2. Am holding your hand from thousands of kilometres away Down Under > look and so understand what you are seeing and feeling and fearing. Agree 100%. You have put down all the logical ‘bad’ points – let’s hope at least some of them will not come true !!!

  3. I hope a home will not be built and that chemicals are not used. That looks like some kind of brush hog, a field mower. I’ve used them so many times in Michigan as a part of my job on an estate. Change is gonna happen regardless, nothing ever stays the same in this life and world.

    1. Disturbance is what I feel 🙂 We’ll see—there’s nothing we can do except watch and hope for the best.
      It’s not that I don’t support agriculture; it’s the chemicals I don’t like 🙂

  8. Oh no! It must be so disconcerting for you. Particularly because you have chosen the quiet life.
    I am afraid we are no strangers to construction and upheavals in Singapore – everywhere we turn is a new development. But we are a city, so it is expected.
    Hope whatever comes your way is gentle, as you are hoping.

    1. Thank you! This won’t be a new development for sure, there are planty spaces for that in the nearest city. It will be a crop… The thing is – all fields around as and further are natural fields for hay, no chemicals. So, this one is in a tinny spot in the middle and we wonder.. what would it be 🙂
